Last Saturday night, VRA Sprint
Car point leader Greg Taylor claimed his second main event win in a row
at Jim Naylor's Ventura Raceway. Taking the lead from Brent Camarillo on
lap ten, Taylor held off repeated challenges from the young driver to
score his fourth win of the season and continue his march to the title.
Camarillo was second in the 30-lap feature, followed by Dakota Kershaw,
Kyle Smith, and Tom Hendricks.
Once again in the saddle of Tommy Horne's potent #13 entry, Ventura's
Greg Taylor started fourth in the main event after winning his series
leading eighth heat race. Steadily making his way forward, the former
track champion was not to be denied on this night and took the victory.
Currently holding a 505 point advantage over Josh Ford, Taylor has two
Hard Charger Awards, thirteen top-10 finishes, and 109 feature laps led
to his credit.
Camarillo's Brent Camarillo had to settle for second after leading the
first nine laps of the main event. Piloting the #51 Agromin Soil / Waste
Management special, Camarillo won the night's second heat race before
starting second in the 30-lap main event. Now fifth in the point chase,
Brent has four heat race victories, one semi-main win, one Hard Charger
Award, seven top-10 finishes, and twenty-six feature laps led in 2011.
Scoring third in the Ventura main event was Oak Park's Dakota Kershaw.
Driving the #28 Interprise Capitol / Roll Control machine, Kershaw won
his third heat race of the year by taking the night's first 10-lap
event. Currently thirteenth in the standings, Dakota has six top-10
finishes and thirty-five main event laps led on the season.
Kyle Smith of Moorpark earned his first Hard Charger Award of the year
with a fourth place run after starting seventeenth. Piloting the #55S
Agromin Soil / Waste Management entry, Smith placed sixth in his heat
race and is now eighth in the championship points. Kyle has three top-10
finishes on the year and four main event laps led to his credit.
Simi Valley's Tom Hendricks claimed fifth at the checkered flags after
starting eleventh. Driving the #71K Sander Engineering / Cory Kruseman
Sprint Car & Midget Driving School machine, Hendricks scored fourth in
his heat race and is now sixteenth in the point standings. To date, Tom
has three top-10 finishes in the 2011 campaign.
Ventura Raceway scheduled five other companion classes on the night.
Johnathon Henry won the third USAC vs. VRA Midget "Battle at the Beach"
and Rob Green won his first IMCA Modified feature. Andrew Mulhearn took
the USAC Ford Focus Midget main event, as Cole Custer won in the USAC
Junior Ford Focus Midget division. George Ito claimed victory in the
20-lap VRA Go Kart feature.
