6-29-11 Moses Smith Top-Ten at Infineon Raceway
Source Kaye Reshaw
NASCAR K&N Pro

Moses Smith, pilot of the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing brought home his best Infineon Raceway NASCAR K&N Pro Series finish. After a charge through the field, he crossed the finish line in 7th of the 41 competitors that started the 64-lap race on this challenging road course. This finish strengthened his second place in the chase for the 2011 NKNP West Series championship.

“It was a good race,” said Smith. “We were really busy out there. The race stated out mellow but got hectic fast.”

Smith wasn’t able to complete a qualifying lap because of a blown motor as he took the green flag. With the necessary engine change, he would be forced to begin the race in 37th. This was not a great way to start but his driving and determination earned him a 7th place finish and the Coca-Cola Move of the Race Award.

When the green flag waved, Smith quickly gained 13 positions in his first two laps around the 1.99-mile track. Along with the race leaders, championship winning crew chief Mario Isola brought the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota down pit road at lap 20 for fuel. After the pit stops sorted the cars back out, Smith found himself running in 18th, but it wasn’t long until Smith moved into the top-ten. A second trip down pit road while under caution at lap 29, had the Hasa team quickly giving Smith four fresh tires. Once again, at the restart on lap 32, Smith was in 18th. At lap 46, he had maneuvered his car back into the top-ten. With less than ten laps to go, the No. 7 got into the No. 16 Hasa Toyota causing the car to spin. Smith kept it going only losing three positions and would take the checkered flag in seventh.

“It was a good points day,” continued Smith. “We have some breathing room with those that are chasing us down for the championship.”

“There were over 300 Hasa fans that came out to cheer us on. It’s great to see our fans really get into the race. I know they had a great time.”

“We’re on to Toyota Speedway next week. It will be my 60th start in the West Series. I ran my first series race at Irwindale, finishing 10th and it would be cool if I could get my first win there as well.”

The Thunder Valley Casino Resort “200” at Infineon Raceway will be televised July 7th at 3 pm PST. Check your local listing for any changes. The series next visits Toyota Speedway in Irwindale on July 2nd.

6-29-11 Holmes and the No. 20 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Top Toyota at Toyota Speedway Holmes goes from 12th to 4th in the last 100-laps

NASCAR K&N Pro

Bill McAnally Racing’s driver of the No. 20 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota Camry, Eric Holmes brought home a fourth place finish at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, California.

Holmes and the No. 20 NAPA Toyota team were hungry for the victory in Irwindale. The NAPA entry from BMR has eight regular season victories at the ½-mile track just outside Los Angeles. Holmes qualified the NAPA entry on the outside of row three recording an 18.634 time with a speed of 96.598 mph.

During the first 25 laps, Holmes reported to his crew chief, Duane Knorr, that the NAPA Toyota Camry ‘wasn’t bad”. There was a half-way break in the 200-lap race at which time the NAPA team had ten minutes to make adjustments. The shuffling of the pack at the restart put the no. 20 on the board in 12th but two laps later, Holmes was in tenth. He began his move toward the front reporting while under caution the “it is hard to pass” and that contact with the No. 44 of Derek Thorn messed up some of the handling of the car. A final restart at lap 165 had the competitors often going three wide for position. At lap 189, Holmes moved into 5th and a last hard charge garnered him the fourth place spot.

“That was a great race,” said Holmes. “We had a good NAPA Toyota Camry. It was just tough out there. We’re happy with our finish though we went into this to win it. We didn’t quit get it done.”

“Got to thank all the NAPA AutoCare store owners and NAPA employees that came out to support us. Great race partners like NAPA is what keeps us racing week after week.”

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West will be at Evergreen Speedway July 9th and 10th in Monroe, Washington. This will be the series first visit since 2008. Eric Holmes holds the qualifying record piloting the NAPA entry from BMR. Toyota will be looking for their first manufacturer win at the track that has hosted 50 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West events from as far back as 1964.

Set your DVRs. The NKNP West Series race from Infineon can be seen on Thursday July 14th at 3 pm PT on SPEED Channel. Catch the race from Toyota Speedway on Thursday July 21st and the upcoming race from Evergreen Speedway on Thursday July 28th.

6-28-11 Kids Night and City of Modesto Night on Saturday, Independence Day Firecracker 150 on Sunday, Including Fireworks Spectacular
Source David Holman
Stockton 99 Speedway

Here we are, once again, sitting at the edge of our Nation's Independence Day ready and waiting to celebrate. Well, you won't have long to wait because on Saturday, July 2nd, the celebration begins with Kids Night & City of Modesto Night at the Speedway, featuring the NCMA Sprint Cars, Vintage Hard Tops, Mini Trucks, Legends of the Pacific, Pro-4 Modifieds and the Mini Cups.
For the Open-Wheel Enthusiast, the NCMA Sprints are served to order as they circle the quarter-mile paved oval in the low 13 second range, which always produces the quick-paced excitement open-wheelers have come to expect. Napa's David Goodwill (3) heads the Sprints into Stockton with a 47 point lead over Justin Kawahata (15) of Clovis (335-288). On the podium in third, Modesto's Legendary Ed Amador (76) sits another 9 points in arrears. Goodwill won last time out at Stockton and has been perfect for the month of June, winning at Roseville on the 11th and the next week at Madera on the 18th. The rest of the field will have to pick up their games if they expect to close the gap this weekend.
Conrad Cavallero (2) of Santa Rosa and his Vintage Hardtops will fill the summer air with nostalgia when they roll onto the high banks this weekend. If you’re in to racing days gone by, this is one race you certainly won’t want to miss. This Series always produces an absolutely entertaining program.
The Mini Trucks will return to action in their third appearance of the year. Stockton’s Guido Bindi (29) leads the way in this Division by a massive 54 points over Chad Bindi (4), also of Stockton (110-57). Sitting in third and sharing seat time with Chad Bindi, Lisa Rutta rests another 9 points back in the #4 Truck.
The most consistent Touring Division to frequent the storied venue, the Legends of the Pacific, visit for the third time this Season. These scaled-down models of days gone by always put on a well-maintained, but at the same time, wild show. Robby Czub (05) of Rocklin has won the previous two races at the speedway this year. But that, in no way, jeopardizes the action this Series produces each time they roll onto the slick, asphalt surface. Look for more of the same this weekend, and look for someone to step up and dethrone the young Czub. It’s a tall order, but this is short track racing and as everyone knows, anything can, and usually does, happen. At the time of this Newsletter, the points were being revamped, but your top three are as follows: #1 Luis Tyrrell (74m) of Brisbane, #2 'Jammin' Jessica Walker (21) of San Ramon and # 3 Tony Mangini (7) of Benicia.
If you have never seen the Nor Cal Pro 4 Modifieds, then you are in for a wonderful treat. These little four-cylinder hotrods put the rubber to the asphalt with unbelievable speed. Windsor’s Neo Nuno (54) sits on the top tier in this Touring Series with a gargantuan 77 point lead over second place runner Kevin Barba (90), also of Windsor (863-786). Yet another driver from Windsor, and a Rookie this year, Vincent Sanchez (6) holds down the third spot another 80 points back.
So far, the Mini Cups have been embroiled in the most hotly contested points battle of the year. Currently, Bryce Napier (03) of Scotts Valleys holds down the top spot by a mere 4 points over runner-up Jackson Ezell (15) of Lodi (148-144). Sitting another 4 points off the pace, 2010 Champ Cody Johnston (50) of Stockton rounds out the top three, which makes this the closest race at the Speedway.
Then, on Sunday, July 3rd, the NASCAR Whelen All American Series explodes onto the racing surface in the annual Firecracker 150, brought to you by California Welding Supply Co. On the docket for this very exciting event will be the Western Late Models in 150 Laps of high-speed pleasure. Also, the Grand American Modifieds return to action with the Super Stocks,
Bombers, Basically-4- Cylinders and the Annual Fireworks Spectacular Show.
KIDS DAY will be Saturday, July 2nd, and will include Big Wheel races, bounce house, chalk drawing, goodie bag for first 250 kids between the ages of 2 & 10 and free raffle drawing for all kids ages 2-15.
Additionally,
There is going to be a Budweiser draw for the Western Late Model Drivers on July 2nd, it is mandatory for the following drivers to show up no later than 6pm to secure their position. All drivers will be admitted to the pits at no charge, this does not apply to crew members and/or owners. This draw is for July 3rd, Firecracker 150 race.

If the driver does not show up, they will start in the back of the 24 car field.

These are the drivers needed to be here for the Budweiser Draw to be held approx. 7pm - 8pm.

6-27-11 Young Cristiani Wins Big on Fair Nights
Source Matthew J. Sullivan
Redwood Acres Raceway

Making his first ever start at Redwood Acres Raceway, 17 year old Trevor Cristiani took the victory in the AABLM 75-lap feature event during the Redwood Acres Fair. Not only was it Cristiani s first visit and win at the 3/8-mile paved oval, in addition it was his first career win in the AABLM touring series of which he is competing in full-time for the first time. Cristiani s win solidified his top position in points making it an extraordinary task to catch the Ukiah, California driver. In local action, Dennis DelBiaggio took the win in the sportsman division while other main event winners were Paul Peeples, Jr. in the Thunder Roadster class, visiting driver Caity Miller in the roadrunners and Nick Green in the real stock division.

Ryan Robinson took the victory in the real stock trophy dash while Jim Redd won the heat race. The first lap of the main event saw trouble for 2010 real stock track champion, Casey Mitchell as his string of bad luck in 2011 continued with a flat left rear tire. Redd looked to be a serious contender for the victory but was sidelined by an overheating problem. The closing laps proved to be a race for the win between three yellow cars, Nick Green, Robinson and Donnie Hyman.
Hyman looked to have second place from Robinson with only a handful of laps left but got loose off turn four, breaking his momentum. At the checkered flag, it was Green holding off Robinson and Hyman to win.
Wyatt Roach placed fourth while Mark Williams was fifth.

Dylan Cook looked to be very strong in the roadrunner division on the night as he took home the win in the trophy dash and in the heat race.
In the main event, it was an early battle of the brothers between Brett and Brian Murrell, Jr. until Brian took the lead. The race was marred by several incidents and by a lap 8 restart, Cook held the lead over visiting driver, Caity Miller from Santa Rosa. However, going into the first turn, Cook got loose and spun handing the lead to Miller. After a brief battle Brian Murrell, Jr., Miller ran away from the field and went to the checkered flag unchallenged. Cook was able to get back to second ahead of Murrell, Jr., Ken Barrett and Michael Lawrence.

The Thunder Roadster trophy dash went to Randy Olson while the heat win went to Paul Peeples, Jr. As expected, when Olson and Peeples are on the same track, they re usually the two that have to be beat to win and it was no different on this night. Peeples and Olson ran nose to tail in first and second for the majority of the feature race.
Peeples wasn t seriously challenged until late in the going when traffic broke his momentum allowing Olson to move to his bumper.
Olson was unable to mount a serious attack on Peeples for the lead and at the checkered flag it was Peeples winning over Olson, Lonnie Tamboury, Bruce Ziemer and Thomas Payne.

Larry Pries won the trophy dash but in the heat race he got loose and spun in turn four damaging his rear end. Brandon Barnwell won the heat. Kenny led the early stages of the main event from his pole starting position but he did not have enough strength to hold off Dennis DelBiaggio. For perhaps the first time all season, it was an uneventful race for DelBiaggio as he more or less cruised to the victory. Angelo Marcelli placed second, Larry Pries third, Brandon Barnwell fourth and Demello fifth.

The Airport Auto Brokers Late Model touring series made their first of two scheduled visits to the Acres this season. Crescent City driver, Howard Ford held off Roseville s Eric Schmidt to win the trophy dash.
The invert for the 75-lap feature was eight giving the front row to Jim Stillman and Jeremy Hopkins while fast qualifier, Randy Houston had to start eighth. There was trouble on the first lap as Jeremy Donahoo broke loose and spun between turns three and four. Ford had nowhere to go and nailed Donahoo s spinning car forcing both drivers out of action. It was determined that the track had been severely oiled down. Officials brought the remainder of the field in the pits to allow the track crew, including promoter Rich Olson to clean the race track.

After a delay of over 30 minutes, the race resumed but not for long.
Going into turn one, David Miller made contact with Corey James bumper sending James spinning into the wall. Behind him, several drivers including Miller, Schmidt and Houston spun to avoid him.
Thankfully everyone was able to continue racing. The race was caution free from that point on with Junior Roddy the leader on the restart.
Allen Gibney was going everything he could to hold off the faster cars but by lap eight Trevor Cristiani was able to maneuver to second.
Fast time qualifier, Randy Houston lost power and drove to the pits.
Cristiani wasted no time taking the lead from Roddy as he passed him as soon as he caught him. Not long later, James pulled his car into the infield. Schmidt and Miller both got by Roddy for second and third.

Miller looked to be the strongest car in the field and after finally getting by Schmidt, he closed quickly on Cristiani. Everything looked to be playing right in the hands of the more experienced Miller, but coming off turn four he spun. AABLM flagman, Johnny Miskill held off on the yellow as Miller got going again Cristiani now held a comfortable margin while Schmidt and Doss battled for second place.
The handling on Schmidt s car looked to get worse as the race went on and Doss was able to take second in the closing stages of the race.
When the double checkered flags dropped, it was Cristiani winning handily over Doss, Schmidt and Miller, the only four cars on the lead lap.

Racing takes a one week break at the Acres before returning July 9th when the Tri-Track Modified series will make their first and only stop of the season. Following that, the AABLM series returns to the raceway for the second time the next race on July 30th.

6-27-11 Raudman Solid All Day in NASCAR K&N Pro Series Return Late Wreck Derails Top Ten Run at Infineon Raceway
Source David Reed
NASCAR K&N Pro

Craig Raudman of Redding, CA was excited to return to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series this past weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA. That excitement propelled the Heritage Motor Sports team all weekend but they left with bittersweet disappointment after Raudman was involved in a last lap crash that dropped him from a sure top ten finish to a 16th place result after it was all said and done.

Raudman drove the #22 Approved Memory/Davidson Equipment Sales/Heritage Cattle Co. Chevrolet in the Thunder Valley Casino Resort sponsored event at the 1.99-mile road course for his first race back in the series as a driver in more than a decade. The plan was simple. Race the track and not worry about anybody else.

For most of the race that plan played out to perfection as the former NASCAR Southwest Tour champion let faster cars go when needed and did not fight for positions early, instead, focused on track position for late in the race. With less than five laps to go he was running seventh and just looking to bring the car home in one piece.

That all changed on the last lap when another competitor rooted his way by and sent a couple of cars spinning kicking up a dust storm that would make West Texas proud. The unfortunate thing for Raudman is that it left a wounded car directly in front of him but not visible through the dust. Race over.

"I thought we had played the strategy pretty well," Raudman said. "For not being in a K&N Series car for a long time, I felt really good; I could have gone fifty more laps. The crew was awesome and we just stayed out of trouble and took what the track gave us. We were in perfect position going up the hill on the last lap but it all went wrong in turn three. It happens and now we have a busted up race car that needs some work."

While the finish was not an indication of how well they actually ran, Raudman left Infineon on a high. "It is just awesome to drive race cars and I had a blast racing at Infineon," Raudman offered. "I am so thankful to Dave Reed and Ted Davidson for their support and to John Gomez for making this opportunity a reality. Blaine (Bergen, car chief) and I have a lot of work to do get this car back in shape but we will get it done."

For the past three seasons, Raudman has acted as crew chief and driver coach for Jonathon Gomez and has been a race winning crew chief in the series for the past seven years. The Heritage Motor Sports Team is available for rent to funded drivers. (See information below).

Raudman has started 20 races in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series-West (primarily 1996-2000) where he scored one top five finish along with seven career top ten performances. His best points finish was 13th after the 1998 season.

Craig Raudman is supported by Approved Memory, Davidson Equipment Sales, Heritage Cattle Company, and Century Boatland. Craig Raudman won the 2001 NASCAR Southwest Tour championship and has been a race winning crew chief in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series for the last five years. During USAC/CRA's match races with the Western Racing Classic Series, Mitchell finished fourth at Watsonville and scored nineteenth at Santa Maria. To date, the USAC Western Midget Series graduate has two heat race victories, six top-10 finishes, and led twenty-six main event laps. The point leader will have his sights set on another feature win at USAC/CRA's "home track."

Temecula's Mike Spencer will be looking to return to Perris' victory lane at the Firecracker 30. Driving Ron Chaffin's famed #50 Madera Produce / Circle C Marketing Maxim, the 3-time defending series champion was red hot out of the gate winning the first three features of the 2011 campaign. Now second in the points, Mike was third at Watsonville and scored eighteenth at Santa Maria after leading the first twenty-two laps. Spencer has earned three Sander Engineering Fast Time Awards on the season, to go with two heat race victories, one semi-main win, four top-10 finishes, and led sixty-four main event laps.

Nic Faas of Huntington Beach climbed to third in the point standings behind the wheel of Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / VP Racing Fuels Spike. The former USAC Western States Midget Champion has one fast time award, four heat race victories, one hard charger award, and five top-10 finishes on the year. This Saturday, Faas will be looking to add the "Firecracker 30" to his resume.

Visalia's Greg Bragg is fourth in the championship points. Driving Tom and Laurie Sertich's #92 Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror / Pacific Business Machine Buckley, the team did not travel to Watsonville, but Greg took third at Santa Maria. To date, the 3-Time California Lightning Sprint Champion has one heat race victory, six top-10 finishes, and earned two Keizer Wheels Hard Charger Awards on the season. Bragg will have Casey Shuman as a teammate and both drivers will be motivated to put the Moose Racing entries in victory circle.

After finishing fifth at Santa Maria, Torrance's "Super" Rickie Gaunt is fifth in the point chase. Piloting David Miller's #66 Tom Roberts Design / Barnes Systems Inc. Eagle, the team did not travel to Watsonville but Gaunt has one semi-main victory, four top-10 finishes, and led nine main event laps in 2011. The former SCRA Sprint Car Champion won the 2002 "Firecracker 30" from the seventeenth starting spot and wants to add another to his career win list.

Among the other top USAC/CRA contenders expected to be in action are Yorba Linda's Austin, Cody, and "The Ripper" Rip Williams, Riverside's "Dynamite" David Cardey, "The Kruser" Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Visalia's Jace and Richard VanderWeerd, Norco's Ronnie Gardner, Greg Alexander of Gardena, and many more. "Wide Open" Wes Gutierrez of San Martin and Norwalk's Brandon Thomson will join the list of visiting drivers looking to claim the "Firecracker 30."

Local 360 iron-block powered Sprint Cars are welcome to race with USAC/CRA. The 360s can run their local approved tires (all four corners must be Hoosier), but must meet series tech standards and race track muffler rules. The Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series does not have an entry fee or charge for transponders, but drivers must have one-way radios. 6-27-11 Greg Taylor Pockets $3000 Ventura All Coast Challenge
Source Lance Jennings
Ventura Raceway

Starting from the tenth starting position, a determined Greg Taylor scored the second round of the All Coast Construction 360 Challenge at Ventura Raceway. The 30-lap victory was the second triumph of the 2011 campaign for the point leader, as the series will take a short break until returning to action on July 16th.

With thirty-three cars checked in for the $3000 top prize, teammates Jimmy Crawford and Josh Ford shared the front row of the main event. At the drop of the green flag, Ford used the outside line to his advantage to grab the lead. Last year's All Coast Challenge Champion was followed by Crawford, visiting driver Richard VanderWeerd, last week's winner Brian Camarillo, Greg Taylor, and Markus Niemela at the completion of the first lap.

Taylor, up from tenth, soon dropped Camarillo to fifth as VanderWeerd and Crawford battled side by side for second. Riding the high line of the Ventura oval, Greg soon caught VanderWeerd and motored his way into third. As Ford continued to lead the way, Taylor executed a successful turn one "slide job" on the next circuit to secure second from Crawford. Josh's lead began to shrink as Taylor gave chase.

A few laps later, the VRA point leader used another turn one slider to take the lead from Ford on lap seven. Josh tried to battle back, but Taylor was too strong on this night. As the leaders reached the back markers, the order was Taylor, followed by Ford, Crawford, VanderWeerd, Camarillo, and Niemela. As the laps counted down, Taylor continued to dominate and took the checkered flags, trailed by Ford, VanderWeerd, Camarillo, and Johnathon Henry.

After claiming a win on May 14th after Cory Kruseman had muffler issues, there was no doubt that this was Greg Taylor's night. Piloting the #7 Clark Engineering Construction / Westco International Consulting Inc. special, the series point leader not only put $3000 in his pocket, he earned the program's "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job" honors, and now leads the All Coast standings. With $5000 up for the October 29th race winner and an additional $5000 to the Challenge point champion, Greg can potentially earn an outstanding payday. To date, the former track champion has six heat race victories, ten top-10 finishes, and led eighty-seven main event laps on the season.

Camarillo's Josh Ford got the better of teammate Jimmy Crawford to lead the first six laps before falling to Taylor. The former USAC National Sprint Car Rookie of the Year held tough and claimed second in the #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machining entry. Currently second in the VRA points battle, Josh was second in his heat race to Brent Camarillo and is now 355 points behind Taylor. With three heat race victories, one hard charger award, and ten top-10 finishes to his credit, Ford is fourth in the All Coast standings will be looking for the next Ventura feature win on July 16th.

Richard VanderWeerd of Visalia finished third in Tommy Horne's potent #13 Steve Watt Enterprises machine. A regular with the USAC/CRA 410s and the West Coast 360 Series, VanderWeerd won the night's third heat race and is now twenty-sixth in the VRA championship points. In limited action, Richard has one semi-main victory, two top-10 finishes, and is now thirteenth in the All Coast Challenge points.

After winning the night's fourth heat race, Camarillo's Brian Camarillo took the #22 Agromin Soil / Waste Management car to fourth in the main event. Last week's feature winner is currently fourth in the VRA standings with five heat race victories, one semi-main win, and six top-10 finishes in 2011. Camarillo is twelfth in the All Coast points and will have his eyes set on the next Ventura main event on July 16th.

Stockton's Johnathon Henry took Kevin Kierce's #3 sprinter to a fifth place finish after starting twelfth in the 30-lap main event. Henry was third in his heat race and is now twenty-second in VRA points despite only having three starts. With three top-10 finishes to his credit in 2011, the young driver is also second in the All Coast Challenge, forty-five points behind Greg Taylor. Look for Johnathon to have strong performances at Ventura Raceway, including his shot for a $10,000 paycheck on October 29th's All Coast Construction finale.

Camarillo's Brent Camarillo won second heat race of the season by taking the night's first 10-lap event. Driving the #51 Agromin Soil / Waste Management machine, Camarillo scored twelfth in the night's feature and is now seventh in the VRA standings. Brent is currently sixth in the All Coast points and has one semi-main victory, one hard charger award, and five top-10 finishes in 2011. The young driver will be ready when the Ventura Racing Association returns to action the July 16th.

Markus Niemela of Santa Barbara won his first heat race of the year in the #69 Steve Watt Enterprises / Christian Stover Foundation special. Niemela claimed sixth in the night's main event and sits eighth in the series point chase. Now fourteenth in the All Coast points, Markus has one hard charger award and seven top-10 finishes on the year.

Buena Park's Brody Roa won the night's 12-lap semi-main, earning a transfer spot with Derek Buckley, Tom Hendricks, and Tom Harper. Roa was fourteenth in the main event, while Buckley finished tenth, Hendricks scored nineteenth, and Harper scored seventeenth.

Ventura Raceway had four other companion classes scheduled on the night. Josh Lakatos won the "Battle at the Beach," featuring the VRA versus USAC Midgets. Parker Colston won the USAC Young Guns (Junior Ford Focus Midget) twenty lap feature and Nick Carlson led all twenty laps to claim the USAC Ford Focus Midget main event. James Locy claimed the VRA Go Kart feature victory.

6-27-11 Eric Holmes Finishes in Third at NASCAR K&N Pro Series West at Sonoma
Source Kaye Reshaw
NASCAR K&N Pro

Bill McAnally Racing’s driver of the No. 20 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota Camry, Eric Holmes brought home a third place finish at Saturday’s Thunder Valley Casino Resort “200”. The finish moves him up several spots in the chase for the 2011 NKNP West Series championship to third.

“What a weekend,” said Holmes. He put the No. 20 NAPA Toyota from Bill McAnally Racing at the top of the speed charts during first practice and qualified on the outside of row two for the 64-lap race.

Holmes ran with the top five during the first 15 laps before coming in to the pits while under green at lap 20 to take on fuel. He restarted in 19th and 20 laps later was back in the top five. “We were trying to stay out of the mayhem. There were some drivers that were all over the place. With about 15 laps to go, David Mayhew got into me and hooked my car. I lost about eight spots but I worked my way back up.”

With five laps to go, Holmes began to make his final attempt to catch up with NASCAR Sprint Cup regular and eventual winner, Joey Logano and David Gilliland. Coming to the final corner of the race, Mayhew and Holmes were fighting hard for position. “The #17 got underneath me as we came out of the turn. I gave him room but I didn’t lift off the throttle. I caught his right rear corner. I hate when that happens. We are buddies. I don’t ever want to wreck a car especially that close to the finish. We’re two veterans racing for a win. It’s not something I ever wanted to happen especially when racing someone I respect as much as David Mayhew.”

The Thunder Valley Casino Resort “200” at Infineon Raceway will be televised July 7th at 3 pm PST. Check your local listing for any changes. The series next visits Toyota Speedway in Irwindale on July 2nd.

6-27-11 BMR driver Paulie Harraka finishes12th at Infineon Raceway
Source Kaye Reshaw
NASCAR K&N Pro

Paulie Harraka finished 12th driving the No. 12 Thunder Valley Casino Toyota Camry at Infineon Raceway Saturday afternoon. This was the Duke University rising senior’s first regular season start in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West in 2011 for Bill McAnally Racing.

Harraka qualified the No. 12 Thunder Valley Casino Toyota in 9th of the over 40 cars that would start the 64-lap road course race in Sonoma. Crew chief Chris Nelle made the call to bring the car to pit road during the second round of caution laps to make adjustments and take on fuel. A series of green flag pit stop at lap 20 gave Harraka his first opportunity to run for the front, taking over the lead at lap 23. The caution flag flew at lap 27 for a small grass fire on the track in turn 7. It was quickly extinguished.

At the restart at lap 33, NASCAR Sprint Cup regular, David Gilliland took over the lead from Harraka who ran in second until lap 52. A miscommunication of a caution between his spotter and NASCAR caused Harraka to be posted and moved to the end of the lead lap cars. While under caution, Harraka took the opportunity to return to pit road to top off with fuel. He restarted in 27th with seven laps to go and would navigate thru traffic to record a 12th place finish.

"Leading laps and contending for the win with our #12 Thunder Valley Casino Toyota was really a thrill,” said Harraka. “It's exactly what we went there to do, and I'm sure every one of Thunder Valley's guests were on their feet. I love racing at Infineon, and am grateful for the opportunity to compete there. Although an unfortunate miscommunication with NASCAR brought a premature end to our hopes of winning, I am focusing on the fantastic job that my guys at BMR did of preparing a race car good enough to run in the Top 2 for the majority of the race."

The Thunder Valley Casino Resort “200” at Infineon Raceway will be televised July 7th at 3 pm PST. Check your local listing for any changes.

6-27-11 June 25th All Coast #2 Report
Source Cliff Morgan
Ventura Raceway

Thirty three VRA Sprint Cars and drivers signed into the pits all with the hope to be the team to take the $3,000 winners check in the second of three All Coast Challenge Races for VRA 360 Sprint Cars. All the top drivers were there and all gave it there best shot. In the end it was VRA past champion and current point leader Greg Taylor who showed them the way. Taylor started tenth in the field of 20 cars in the 30 lap feature, but by lap seven he had passed early race leader Josh Ford. He then went on to lead the rest of the race that saw 16 of the finishers on the lead lap. Three cars were one lap down and only Cory Kruseman did not finish the event going off the track on lap 25. Following Taylor to the line were Josh Ford, Richard Vanderweerd, Brian Camarillo and Johnathon Henry. The good car count saw three heat races run with wins going to Brent Camarillo in heat one, Markus Niemela in heat two, Richard Vanderweerd in heat three and Brian Camarillo in heat four. One Semi Main was run with Brody Roa taking the win. Derek Buckley, Tom Hendrix and Tom Harper joined him taking the final transfer spots for the main event. The win by Taylor in this special All Coast Challenge Series race puts him out front in the point race for this prestigious championship for the series within a series. With one race to go on October 29, Taylor leads Johnathon Henry by 40 points and Derek Buckley by 65 points and Josh Ford by 105 points. His win also keeps him out front in the regular season VRA point race by 355 points over Josh Ford. Ventura Raceway and all the VRA drivers and crews want to give a special thanks to Mike Grosewendt of All Coast Construction for sponsoring this event and series.

The Second Battle of the Beach for USAC versus VRA Midgets proved to be another great race. With 24 cars signed into the pits and all of them taking the green flag for the 30 lap feature the fans in attendance knew that the race would be one not to miss. Josh Lakatos who has raced hard here on many occasions finally got his first USAC Midget win at Ventura as he started outside front row and went on to dominate the race leading all 30 laps. VRA Midget driver Brent Camarillo tried desperately to catch him to no avail and finished a strong second. Cory Kruseman took third to maintain his point lead in the Battle at the Beach Series as well as the VRA Midget Series. Fourth place went to Robby Josett with fifth going to Greg Bragg. There were a number of early race incidents that took four cars out of the event. Once the race got going it race fast and furious to the end. Sean Dodenhoff had the hardest crash of the evening as he flipped his number 9D midget in turn three on lap 26 bringing out a short red flag condition. There were three heat races competed on Saturday with wins going to Cory Kruseman in heat one, Brent Camarillo in heat two and Josh Lakatos in heat three.

USAC Ford Focus Midgets and Junior Ford Focus Midgets were also on hand Saturday night. Wins in the Junior Ford Focus division went to Parker Colston who took the one heat race and then went on to end Cole Custer's domination of feature wins in taking the 20 lap main event. Finishing second through fifth were Katlynn Leer, Zac Bogner, Cole Custer and Christine Breckenridge. Brennan Rogers who had finished second on the track had his car fail post race inspection taking him out of the final results. Nonetheless, the VRA Junior Midget champion and current point leader, who was making his first Focus start, drove a great race and deserves credit for his effort. In the regular Ford Focus Division, the heat race wins went to Jett Davison in heat one and Wally Pankratz in heat two. The 20 lap feature went to Nick Carlson followed by Wally Pankratz, Casey Martinez, Tyler Dolacki and Jet Davison

VRA Go Karts were the final group racing Saturday night. Two heat races were run with wins going to George Ito and Cody Nigh. The feature was a hard fought win by James Locy followed by Ken Ito,
David Pankratz, George Ito and Tyler Stover.

Ventura Raceway now takes a two week break as special events are held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. We will return to racing on Saturday July 16, with a full program of racing action featuring VRA Sprints, VRA Midgets, Ford Focus Midgets, Junior Ford Focus Midgets, VRA Sport Compacts and VRA Go Karts.

6-21-11 Airport Auto Brokers Late Models set to visit the Acres
Source Matthew J. Sullivan
Airport Auto Brokers Late Models

It should be an exciting night of racing this Saturday, June 25th at Redwood Acres Raceway. The Airport Auto Brokers Late Model tour cars make their first of two scheduled appearances at the 3/8-mile paved oval. The AABLM cars will be joining the Acres four weekly racing divisions of real stocks, roadrunners, thunder roadsters and sportsman cars. Adding to the excitement and thrill of this weekend s races will be the 2011 Redwood Acres Fair.

Ryan Robinson currently leads the points standings in the Real Stock division. Robinson s margin over second place Donnie Hyman is only ten points. Robinson has used consistency to gain the points lead as he has yet to win a main event this season. Casey Mitchell notched the first two main event victories this season while Jim Redd and Bob Lima are the other two winners in the division this season.

The points margin in the roadrunner division is even closer. Robbie Nelson leads surprising rookie driver, Josh Hansen by only seven points. Nelson has a main event victory this season while Hansen has come close but has yet to pull through. Nick Hansen, Ken Barrett and Dylan Cook are the other drivers who ve scored main event victories in the division.

Defending thunder roadster track champion, Thomas Payne looks to be the main to beat again this season. Payne leads second place Chris Sarvinski by 22 points in the race for the championship. Payne scored a main event victory in the last race on June 11th. Paul Peeples, Jr.
has two main event victories on the year while Randy Olson has one.

It s a battle between two of Redwood Acres Raceway s most popular and most experienced drivers in the sportsman division. Larry Pries has won the previous two main events and holds the points lead in the class. Pries leads Angelo Marcelli by 11 points. Marcelli has one main event victory while Brandon Barnwell won the first main event of the season.

Trevor Cristiani leads the points standings for the visiting AABLM tour cars. Though Cristiani hasn t notched a victory yet in the series, he has a firm grip on the points championship as he leads second place Corey James by 127 markers. Cristiani will be making his first appearance ever at the Acres this weekend which could open the door for James and third place, Jim Stillman, Jr. to gain ground in the standings. Last season when the AABLM visited, David Miller won the first race while Kevin Ostern dominated the second. Based on Miller s dominance in the season ending Fall Spectacular last season, he is definitely the favorite going into this weekend.

All of the racing action gets going at 6:30 this Saturday evening.
Don t miss out!

For the 4000 fans in the stands, it was easy to decipher whether their collective cups were half-full or half-empty with excitement because the consensus was: like the grandstands for this Event, the excitement level poured out over the brim in a continuous flow. On this night, Saturday Night Short Track Racing was Alive and Well in Stockton, California.

The Mini Cups were on tap for their fourth appearance of the year to get this event underway. Division Points Leader from Scotts Valley, Bryce Napier (03) made quick work of the 25-lapper to score his second win on the Season.

With Napier at pole and Lodi's Jackson Ezell (15) close at hand, the green flag fell on a beautiful day for racing. Napier got a fantastic jump and grabbed the lead immediately where he would ride it out to the checkers for the flag to flag, dominating Victory, his second of the year. "It was fun to come out here and win my second race this year," said the well-spoken young driver, then added, "This race gave us more points for the Championship, and that's what we're racing for this year." Once this race strung out, it finished pretty much in the same order it started with Ezell finishing well-back in second. 2010 Champ Cody Johnston (50) of Stockton had his usual solid run in finishing on the podium in third, while Danville's Colin Mullan (27) wrapped up his night in fourth. The #48 of Discovery Bay's Jared Cronk, suffering mechanical failure at the onset, had to settle, if a top five can be considered having to settle, for fifth.

In the Bombers Main, Mike Massone (007) of Stockton proved, once again, he was one who would have to be reckoned with as he drove to his second win of the year in their 30-lap Main Event.

Massone inherited P1 due to a six invert, while Stockton's Dave "Fluff" Anderson (500) inherited the #007's right-side door panel to get this one up to speed. The inside line seemed to be the preferred line on this night, car-attitude-wise, anyway, as Massone beat the field down into turn one where he assumed the point early on and held strong, despite some intense nibbling at his back bumper by Tyler Guzman (93x) of Ceres, until lap 21 when the #043 of Stockton's Roy Luft came spinning high off turn two, which brought with it the first yellow of the night. On the restart, before the field even got back to take the green, Guzman and Bobby Simpson (819t) of Stockton, apparently resumed their rivalry by making contact coming out of four and both cars came spinning down the front-stretch bringing with them the second caution of the race. On what would be the final restart on lap 21, Massone assumed his position out front where he would not be denied on this night as he rolled beneath the checkers for the wire to wire win, he second on the year. Points Leader Jeremy Tucker (028) of Stockton, showed his skills in a borrowed car by finishing second, which allowed him to retain the Point's Lead thus far. Stockton's Guido Bindi, Jr. (816) also showed some skills of his own by finishing on the podium in third. Bindi usually drives in the Mini Truck Division. Simpson slipped back, if only slightly, to finish up in fourth with Guzman losing the most ground, but still managing a fifth place finish.

Mike Graham (93) of Hughson just keeps rolling along in the Super Stock Division as he picked up his fourth win of the year by flexing his muscles for the entire 30 laps.

This one got underway with Robbie Knittel (03) of Lodi and Graham occupying the front row and pacing the field to green. Graham got to the gas early and grabbed the holeshot off into turn one where he would relish the taste of clean air, pretty much unchallenged, over the next 23 laps until lap 24, when Lodi's Matt Wendt (1) looped it down low coming off four and came to rest facing traffic in the middle of the front-stretch at which time the flagman had no choice but to throw the yellow high and hard to try to avoid any catastrophic shots, which he managed with grace and skill. On the ensuing restart, Graham, once again, took up residence on that much-coveted real estate out front and from that point forward, it was his race to win, which is exactly what he did by crossing the stripe ahead of the pack for his fourth win of this young season. Atwater's Jason Aguirre (45), after some technical difficulties last time out, came on strong at the end, but had to finally settle for second. Stockton's own Ben Lewis II (22) drove her onto the podium in third with Modesto's Garland Tyler (73) up next in fourth. Rich Harper (5) of Stockton rounded out the top five.

In the Western Late Model Division, it's been a long time coming, but third generation driver, Nic Belletto (15) of Modesto, finally had that break-through race by winning his first-ever Late Model Main Event. Not only did the young driver win, but he did it in convincing fashion by taking it to the house, wire to wire.

This one got up to speed with Belletto sitting P1 and Lodi's Michael Wendt (2) flanking him to the right. Belletto jumped out quick and took the early lead, but not without terrific harassment from the #2 of Wendt. There was some absolutely great racing throughout the pack as several drivers took their turns to try to unseat the young driver from Modesto. However, much like a skilled mathematician, he calculated and handled each challenge like a seasoned veteran until there was nothing left for him but to take the checkers, and with fist-pumping excitement he did just that, almost a full second ahead of his nearest competitor. And, to make the win even more impressive, that nearest competitor happened to be the Legendary Dave Byrd (78) of Seaside. Sammy Solari (3x) of Oakdale was back in his Late Model for only the third time this year, but no rust was visible when he crossed below the checkers and onto the podium in third. Nic's uncle and Points Leader, Jeff Belletto (12x), also of Modesto, had another strong finish in fourth with Carlos Vieira (51) of Atwater rounding out the top five.

In the SRL, there is so much talent, anyone can win on any week. Tonight, that driver would come in the form of Manteca's Jacob Gomes, driving the #16 Sunnyvalley Smoked Meats Chevrolet. Driving yourself into position to be there for the win is just as important as leading every lap. And Gomes proved that on this night capturing his second win in as many races.

This one did not go without controversy, wrecks and mayhem, but go it did, for 150 laps. Mike David of Salida, driving the Heritage Cattle Co., Approved Memory #1 Chevrolet, inherited the pole position due to the seven invert. Zane Lovelace of Sacramento, in the PDQ Automatic Transmission Parts, Inc. #46 Chevrolet, picked up the pace, high and outside. With the green flag in the summer breeze, David beat the field down into turn one and came out on the other side with the early lead, only to be slowed on lap 2 when no less than three cars tangled high in turn one, including Series Points Leader M.K. Kanke of Frazier Park, driving the Sims Trucking, RPM-PSI #33 Chevrolet, which brought out an immediate yellow, the first of the race. Unfortunately, Jared Vorse of Olympia, WA, driving the #20 Knight Fire Protection, Thurston County Transmission Chevrolet, was also collected in the melee, which brought his night to an abrupt end. On the ensuing lap 5 single-file restart, and ten more thereafter, Lovelace got the great jump out of four and laid claim to that much sought-after real estate out front in the fresh air. The only serious challenge for the lead in the first 75 laps came on lap 51, when Derek Thorn of Bakersfield drove his Superior Crankshaft, Sigma Engineering Solutions #26 Toyota deep into turn three and nosed by the #46 at the line just as the fourth yellow of the night broke the silence of the night sky. Unfortunately, and much to his chagrin, after the lap 53 restart, Thorn encountered some mechanical misfortunes, which sent him to the pits on lap 62 and ended any hopes for the #26 to mount another challenge on this night. At the halfway split, it was Lovelace as it had been since early on. However, after working his way methodically through the field from P12 on the starting grid, Prunedale's Legendary Jim Pettit II, had driven his Golden Gate Petroleum, Swift Spring, Mo's Gold Ford into contention in second place. Jacob Gomes was sitting comfortably in third with the #9 3M Automotive Aftermarkets Central California Ford, driven by Madera's Justin Westmoreland, next up in fourth. Manteca's Ross Strmiska, in the #90 Mid-Valley Iron and Metals, Mainline Equipment Chevrolet, rounded out the top five thus far in the race. On the second half restart, Lovelace appeared to have the deepest hunger as he controlled the pace of the race by owning that prime piece of real estate up front. At this point, the wily veteran, Pettit, began to pinch and nibble and bite and claw at the back bumper of the #46, but to no avail. Lovelace continued to chew away at the asphalt, lap after lap, until he could taste the final 5 laps savoring easy on his palate. Unfortunately for the young rookie driver, on lap 145, he left a little too much room low between turns one and two and Pettit jumped all over it, but in doing so, he made contact with the leader, which sent Lovelace up the hill in turn two and the #46 was never able to correct the attitude of his race car. The final yellow flew, which sent both Lovelace and Pettit to take up residence at the tail-end of the longest line. And, wouldn't you know it, and much to his surprise, Gomes inherited the golden ticket in front of the field and took it on to the checkers for the extremely popular win. This would be his second win in a row in the Series, which vaulted him to the top tier in the points standings. Kanke, being the great driver he is, rallied back from his earlier altercation to finish in the not-so-unbelievable runner-up position. Seaside's Dave Byrd, driving the #42 Whalen's Mobile Parts, LunkerDaddy Fishing Lures Chevrolet, worked his way, meticulously, through the field to finish on the podium in third. Strmiska, one of the home-track favorites coming into this Event, ran a very solid fourth with the #18 Moeller Bros. Body Shop, HUR Engines Chevrolet, driven by none other than Eric Holmes of Escalon, after some absolutely fantastic battles throughout the 150 laps, rounding out the top five. After being relegated to the back of the pack, Pettit would finish eighth and Lovelace would finish, the last car on the lead lap, in eleventh. Including the Competition Yellow on lap 75, this race was marred by thirteen caution periods and a single red flag. Derek Thorn set fast time in qualifying with a blistering 13.135/68.5mph, just slightly off the Track Record of 13.084 set in 2009 by Mike Mendenhall. The 150 lap race, the longest ever for this Series at Stockton, took the eventual winner, Jacob Gomes, one hour and twenty-six minutes to put this one in the books.

Golden State King of The West Sprints

The Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series would like to give congratulations to Chico’s Jonathan Allard and San Jose’s Tim Kaeding for finishing first and second at the 40th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup this past weekend.

The prestigious event at the Skagit Speedway paid $40,000-to-win and saw Allard lead all 40-laps on Saturday night, holding off Oklahoma's Shane Stewart and then a late-race challenge from KWS point leader T. Kaeding.

The two-time Golden State 410 champion never faltered and crossed the checkered flag to score his third career Dirt Cup victory aboard the Morrie & Katie Williams No. 0 sprint car. Allard came into the night second in points and took full advantage of his front row starting spot to claim the huge payday.

"It's unbelievable to win another Dirt Cup,” said Allard. “I want to thank my car owners Katie and Morrie Williams, my whole team Ashley and Shawn and all the guys, as well as Chris, Paul, Drake and everyone that helps us out. They put a lot of effort in especially over the last month we've had."

T. Kaeding had a solid weekend and ended up with yet another runner up finish at the Dirt Cup. The 2002 Golden State 410 champion went into the final night ranking fourth in points and made a late charge to try and get by Allard. After passing Shane Stewart for second “TK” closed in quickly on “JA”, but ran out of time and had to settle for second in the Roth Motorsports No. 83.

“We seem to be a day late and dollar short here,” commented Kaeding following the race. “Congratulations to Jonathan Allard though because he did a great job tonight. We had a good car as well so I really have to thank “Bonzai” and all my guys for making that possible. We got into second there, but just ran out of laps at the end.”

Sacramento’s Willie Croft ended the 40-lap feature in the seventh position to cap a good Dirt Cup for the driver of the Christian Stover Foundation No. 29 machine. The veteran wheel-man currently rounds out the top-five in the Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series standings and continued his strong season to date.

Campbell’s Brent Kaeding transferred through the b-main and raced his way up to ninth in the 40-lapper aboard the Al’s Roofing Supply No. 69 mount. The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame member sits third in the KWS standings, as the tour gets set for an event paying honor to his also legendary father on 4th of July weekend.

Grass Valley’s Jason Statler also transferred through the b-main, but was caught in a wreck during the A-main and finished the contest in 18th at the helm of his DF Rios Motorsports No. 00 sprinter. Other California entrants in the main event included drivers that also fought through issues including 17th place finisher Cory Eliason, 20th place Tommy Tarlton and 21st place Peter Murphy.

The Golden State King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series will now get set for another weekend off, before returning to action with the inaugural Howard Kaeding Classic at the Ocean Speedway on Friday & Saturday July 1 & 2. The event at the Watsonville based quarter-mile bullring is expected to be a can’t miss night of racing, as the powerful 410’s hit the clay for back to back evening’s of competition.

Adult tickets will cost $20 each night, kids 6-12 will be $15, seniors 65 and older with id will be $18 and kids 5 and under will be free. A family pack featuring two adults and two children will be available for $55. More info can be found by calling (831) 662-9466 or by visiting http://www.oceanspeedway.com

The Howard Kaeding Classic will be the 10th and 11th point races of the season for the Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series and current point leader Tim Kaeding will look to back up his win at the track from April 23. That night saw him pass father Brent for the lead of the race and hold off a fast-moving Justin Sanders for the victory. Allard finished third with Brent Kaeding 4th and Andy Gregg 5th.

Winners so far this season with KWS include Tim Kaeding on three separate occasions, Jonathan Allard twice, along with single victories by Andy Gregg, Willie Croft, Peter Murphy and Tommy Tarlton. A pack of hungry drivers will also be looking for their first win of the year at the HK Classic including Evan Suggs, Brent Kaeding, Jason Statler, Bobby McMahan and many more.

NASCAR K&N Pro

Moses Smith, pilot of the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing will be racing thru the turns of Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West makes its return to the 1.99 mile road course on June 25th. This will be the fifth visit to Infineon for Smith in the West Series.

“Heading back to my favorite road course is exciting,” said Smith. “My first three trips there were unlucky but the last year we came away with a top-ten finish. The first year we were taken out after leading the race, and the second year my car caught on fire. In 2009, I was able to lead the race but once again we were unable to finish the race. The No. 16 Hasa Toyota was wrecked during a late in the race restart attempt. Our day was done.”

“So we are ready to turn our luck around. We are second in the chase for the West Series championship and look to close the gap on the point leader. Infineon is the place to get that done.”

“This is a great track for the HASA Pool Products fans; they are really into the road courses,” continued Smith. “We’ve always had great support and the entire No. 16 Hasa/NAPA team is looking forward to this weekend.”

The Thunder Valley Casino Resort “200” at Infineon Raceway will be on Saturday, June 25th. This is a companion race to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Brian Camarillo dominated the field of 18 starters in Saturday's 30 lap VRA Sprint Car Main Event. Starting on the outside of the front row he led all 30 laps and take the win. The race was slowed by only one yellow flag for Brian's brother Brent who stopped in turn four after a back strait get together with a couple of other cars. Point leader Greg Taylor followed Camarillo across the line in second with Josh Ford scoring a third place finish, Markus Niemela was fourth and the top five was rounded out by Derek Buckley. There were three heat races run Saturday with wins going to Derek Buckley in heat one, Brian Camarillo in heat two and Greg Taylor in heat three. After eleven races in the 2011 season, Greg Taylor leads Josh Ford by 340 points.
IMCA Modifieds were on hand with a good field of 19 cars signed in to the pits. Three heat races were run with wins going to Dave Phipps, Joey Claborn and Austin Rodarte. The 20 lap feature was a crash fest with only 7 of the 19 starters around at the end of the race to take the checkered flag. Several spins and a multi car crash on the front strait start finish line that brought out the red flag marred the race. In the end it was Danny Lauer taking the win from his 10th place starting position. He passed second place finisher Brad Prows on lap 15 and went on to his fifth win in five races here in 2011. In several races that have had several crashes, he has come to the front cleanly and fast to take wins. Following Lauer and Prows to the line were Josh Vogt, Aaron Rodarte and Dennis Eckert. Rodarte's fourth place finish keeps him 6 points ahead of Prows in the point race.

VRA Dwarf Cars raced in two divisions Saturday night. Wins in the Senior Class went to Bill Van Praag in their heat race and Keith Vondersaar in the 20 lap main. Vondersaar's win was his first VRA Main event win. He was followed across the line were Mike Neal, Van Praag, George Calvo and Dave Dotson. The final adult class racing was our new VRA Mod Lite Class. Visiting Arizona drivers Andy Eatwell and Bryan Miller ran one two in the 20 lap feature followed by Michael Sweeney Jr., Kevin Alverson and season point leader Jim Chapp. Eatwell made it a sweep by also taking the 7 lap heat race.

6-20-11 The Kruser Sweeps USAC Weekend at Ocean and Santa Maria
Source Steven Blakesley
USAC Western Classic

The USAC Western Classic Racing Series and USAC/CRA visited the central coast of California over the weekend with large fields and comfortable weather at Ocean and Santa Maria Speedways, with Cody Kruseman dominating the show by winning both races.

“The Kruser” from Ventura, CA won both features by virtue of late-race restarts. At Ocean, he led the field to the restart with five laps to go to top Geoff Ensign of Sebastopol and hard-charging Mike Spencer, while his win at Santa Maria came after a lap 22 restart ahead of Huntington Beach’s Nic Faas and Greg Bragg.

The races on the weekend paid points for the both the USAC Western Classic and USAC/CRA with Tony Hunt and Matt Mitchell the incoming points leaders respectively.

On Friday night at Ocean Speedway, incoming WCRS second in points Scott Pierovich led the field to green but flipped violently in turn two. Pierovich was unhurt but done for the weekend after suffering significant damage to his chassis.

Fast-time qualifier Mike Spencer was unable to take the initial green while his team changed his engine. The red flag for the Pierovich flip allowed Spencer time to get on the track and join the field at the rear.

On the restart, “Dynamite” David Cardey flipped collecting Evan Suggs to end both of their nights. Former Ocean Speedway track champion Ryan Bernal led the field through lap four before Kruseman took over the top spot.

The red came out again on lap seven when Timmy Sherman, Jr. flipped and Bernal went to the pits with a flat tire. Spencer marched through the field and took over fifth on lap 20. Matt Mitchell from the rear of the field followed Spencer through to take sixth from Eric Rossi.

Danny Sheridan went toe-to-toe with Ensign for second but they made contact sending Sheridan spinning. That caution set up a five lap shootout between Ensign and Kruseman, with Kruseman getting a solid restart to pull away for the victory. Spencer completed his run to a podium as he finished third ahead of Faas.

Lincoln’s Tony Hunt came home tenth to be the highest finishing 360 in the field worth a $200 bonus from USAC. Shauna Hogg finished 15th but was third amongst USAC Western Classic cars. Hogg also won her heat race on Friday night.

Saturday’s action at Santa Maria Speedway would set up another charge through the field with Sheridan and Mitchell set to start on row nine. Richard Vanderweerd took fast-time with a 14.664 second lap, while WCRS points leader Tony Hunt qualified 13th.

Spencer led the opening laps while Ensign and Hogg passed Hunt. Ensign, Hogg, and Wes Gutierrez went three-wide out of turn two and touched wheels sending Ensign into a spin. Ensign was then hit by Rip Williams.

Sheridan’s drive to the front ended after he was involved in two incidents. First Sheridan was collected when Danny Faira spun on lap 14 in traffic, then Sheridan spun on the ensuing restart as the field entered turn one.

Spencer looked to be in pursuit of his fourth win of the season but was struck by mechanical problems on lap 22 to hand the lead to Kruseman. Mitchell also stopped with mechanical problems.

Kruseman again had an outstanding restart to win over Faas, who won the $1000 to win trophy dash, and Bragg. Tim Barber was the highest USAC Western Classic car and the highest 360 worth $200.

Mitchell’s lead over Spencer in the USAC/CRA points is just five markers with Faas in third, while on the USAC WCRS side, Hunt leads Ensign, Hogg, Barber, and Pierovich. Pierovich fell from second to fifth by missing the Santa Maria event.

Kaeding Performance awards of $50 went to Shauna Hogg on Friday night and Tim Barber on Saturday night.

The USAC Western Classic Racing Series will return to action on July 9 on the pavement at Stockton 99 Speedway, while the USAC/CRA will next race on July 2 at Perris Auto Speedway.

6-17-11 BMR Driver Paulie Harraka Returns to Race at Infineon Raceway
Source Kaye Reshaw
NASCAR K&N Pro Series

Antelope, CA – With a runner up finish last season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Infineon Raceway, Bill McAnally Racing’s driver Paulie Harraka will return to the series piloting the No. 12 Thunder Valley Casino Toyota Camry. He will challenge for the win at the Thunder Valley Casino Resort “200” as part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup weekend at Infineon Raceway. His last race in the series was the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown in January of this year.

The Duke University rising senior has been buried in his studies but now that school is out, he’s anxious to get back to what he loves; racing.

“Since the All-Star Showdown, I’ve been working tirelessly on partnership opportunities that will help me open doors in the NASCAR Camping World Truck or Nationwide Series,” said Harraka. “ I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some of the best and brightest in the Duke community, and, with their help, hope to be racing full-time in one of those series’ next year. Simultaneously, I am pursuing my degree at Duke University, where I’m a bit ahead of schedule and will graduate during May 2012.”

“I’m really excited to get back in the seat of a race car, especially our No. 12 Thunder Valley Casino Toyota Camry. This is the car that we finished 2nd with at Infineon last year, and also finished in the top 3 at Portland and Miller with. It’s a great car, and being able to race again with a number of my crew from the last few years to put it in victory lane is exciting for me! I’ve got a great group of guys and am humbled by the dedication that they have to me and this race team. It’s going to be a blast!”
Harraka is looking forward to returning to this most challenging of road courses.

“Infineon presents a number of very different corners, from slow turns like 7A and 11 to high-speed corners like 9 and 10, and everything in the middle. Thus, it’s challenging to get the car set-up well to work everywhere and, as a driver, it forces you to be on your game all the time. Unlike an oval, there is very little rhythm to a road course. I’ve got to be on my game for every corner, and I’ve got to treat every corner differently.”

“Each turn at Infineon is different, and some require you to go in really hard, while others require you to roll in gently. I’ve got to know what my strategy is for each corner before I get there, so it takes a lot to thinking and strategy from the driver’s seat to be fast there. Some of the corners that look the easiest, like 3A and 10 are actually the most challenging to get through quickly. This is why I love Infineon, though, as it really forces a driver to think a lot and work hard.”

The Thunder Valley Casino Resort “200” at Infineon Raceway will be on Saturday, June 25th. This is a companion race to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. For ticket information, please visit the track’s website at www.infineonraceway.com. Think outside the oval and come cheer for your favorite team in the heart of California’s wine country.

6-17-11 Raudman Back in Driver's Seat at Infineon, Former NASCAR Champion Exchanges Wrenches for the Wheel
Source David Reed
NASCAR K&N Pro Series

Craig Raudman of Redding, CA will return to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series driver's seat when the series visits the picturesque road course of Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA June 24-25. Raudman has been working as a crew chief in the series for much of the past five years but will exchange wrenches for driving gloves and pilot the #22 Approved Memory/Davidson Equipment Sales/Heritage Cattle Co. Chevrolet in the Thunder Valley Casino Resort sponsored event at the 1.99-mile road course layout.

For the past three seasons, Raudman has acted as crew chief and driver coach for Jonathon Gomez but business commitments will prevent Gomez from making several of the remaining races on the schedule, so Raudman and his old car owner Dave Reed along with Ted Davidson were able to put a deal together with John Gomez to field the #22 car at Infineon.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to get back behind the wheel of a K&N Pro Series car," Raudman said. "Working as a crew chief has been a lot of fun but there is nothing like driving. I can't think of a better place to get back behind the wheel then at Infineon. I love the track and have had success there in the past."

Raudman had his best career NKNPS finish at Infineon back in 1997 when he finished fourth after leading most of the race before his battery died with just a few laps left to go. He also won at Infineon in the old NASCAR Southwest Tour back in 1997. Serving as crew chief for Raudman will be Ron Copeland who guided Gomez to the 2010 SRL Southwest Tour title and has worked on the Heritage NKNPS effort as the car chief the past two seasons. Dave Reed will continue as spotter, a role he has filled for much of Raudman's racing career.

John Gomez owns the Heritage Motor Sports team and is currently eighth in the owner's point standings for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. Race rental opportunities exists for the remainder of the season. (see below)

Raudman has started 19 races in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series-West with is last start back in 2000. He has one top five finish along with seven career top ten performances.

6-17-11 The SRL Spears Southwest Tour Makes Their First Appearance of the Year This Saturday
Source David Holman
Stockton 99 Speedway

After a weekend, two weeks ago, of Event-changing weather, which postponed the original date for this race, the light comes to shine, once again, on Saturday, June 18th when the SRL Spears Southwest Tour Series Late Models roll onto the high-banks for their first appearance of the year in the Mid Valley Iron & Metals 150. With little doubt, this is one of the finest touring series on the West Coast. This is one you definitely don't want to miss. So come early because the Old Girl is going to be full to the brim. Also on the Ticket for the Event will be the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Western Late Models, Super Stocks, Bombers and the Mini Cups.

The SRL has a familiar face heading the field in to Stockton this year, and that face comes in the form of M.K. Kanke (33) of Frazier Park. After three races so far this Season, he leads the youngster, Jacob Gomes (16) of Manteca, by a slim four points (500-496). At this point, both drivers are sitting on a win and both drivers have plenty experience on the tight quarter-mile. However, lurking around another six points off the pace, Jim Pettit II (03) of Prunedale, has felt the magic of circling Stockton 99 Speedway for many years. And, to have him that close in the rearview mirror has to be unsettling, to say the least. This promises to be a fantastic battle with a fantastic star-studded field.

Six races into the Season, Modesto’s Jeff Belletto (12x) has three wins to his credit in the Western Late Model Division, which has enabled him to retain the Points Lead and increase it to twenty over now second place, Dave Byrd (78) of Seaside (282-262). Sitting another fourteen points in arrears, Modesto’s Mike Beeler (6) is enjoying a great Season of his own through consistency and perseverance. With much time left on the year, you can already feel the intensity moving up the scale.

In the Super Stocks, due to mechanical issues, Rich Harper (5) of Stockton lost his lead last week and it is now West Modesto’s Garland Tyler (73) with a five point lead in the Division (431-426). Another twenty-two points back, Hughson’s Mike Graham (93) sits in third and is poised to pounce should one or both of the front-runners falter. This is the tightest Points Race in this Division in quite some time, perhaps ever.

Despite suffering a set-back last week, Jeremy Tucker (351) of Stockton still managed to hold onto the Points Lead in the Bomber Division by nineteen points over second place runner, Mike Massone (007), also of Stockton. A mere two points off second, Stockton’s Tony Karsting (312) has quietly made his way to third. Stay tuned to this one, it’s going to get really good before it’s over.

The Mini Cups return for their fourth appearance this year, and so far, it’s been all about 2010 Champ Cody Johnston (50) of Stockton. He leads by forty-six points over Bryce Napier (03) of Scotts Valley (144-98). Another two points back, Lodi’s Jackson Ezell (15) owns va win this year. Look for Johnston to continue his dominance in the Division.
Pit Gates open and registration begins at noon with practice commencing at 2:00 PM. The Grandstands open at 4:00 PM with qualifying set for 4:00 PM and green flag racing slated for 6:00 PM. Ticket prices for the evening will be as follows:
General Admission (16+) $25
Juniors (11-15) $20
Kids 10 & Under FREE
Seniors (60+) $15
Military (W/ Military ID) $15
Family $70
(2 General + 2 Junior’s)

FRIDAY PRACTICE: Event Testing. SRL, Western Late Models, Super Stocks, Bombers and Mini Cups only on June 17th for Friday Night Oval Testing. In an effort to keep costs down for the fans and drivers with the rising costs of operations, it has become necessary to keep the grandstands closed on practice day.

The New Stockton 99 Speedway is located at 4105 N. Wilson Way, ¼-mile west of Highway 99. For more information on tickets and times, please contact the Speedway Office at (209)466-9999 or visit their Website at www.stockton99.com.

6-14-11 Career Best Finish For Capin in NASCAR Mexico Series at Queretaro
Source Steven Blakesley
Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle

19 year-old Alejandro Capin scored his career best effort in the prestigious NASCAR Mexico Series with a third place finish at Queretaro. Capin is a member of the Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle driver development program based in Sacramento, California which develops drivers with the potential for a career in racing.

Capin joined the RSWC program after an extensive tryout and selection process that included a Shoot-out last October. The talented young Mexican driver races in the NASCAR Mexico Series which enjoys strong fan and sponsor support throughout the country.

Driving the #88 Quaker State TOYOTA for Autotec Racing, Capin qualified seventh around the .746 mile oval. Teams were covering the track in under 30 seconds at over 90 miles per hour average.

With good pit strategy and a fast car underneath him, Capin immediately moved forward. Capin conserved his car over the 144 lap distance and began to press the leader with 25 laps to go.

Capin’s dash to the front was halted when he got loose entering turn one and made slight contact with the inside wall. Despite a bent rim, Capin continued on and brought home his career best third place finish.

“We have been very good since the start of the season, so I believe that looking at the championship is very possible,” Capin said. “We just need to work hard on finishing races in the top-ten and I believe we will be contenders by the end of the year!”

The top-three finish was Capin’s third top-ten of the season, allowing him to move into ninth in the series standings. The next race for the NASCAR Mexico Series is June 19 at Autodromo Miguel E. Abed with a total of nine races left in the 2011 season.

“Alejandro brought home his career best finish in a race that had 33 cars and lasted two hours,” Driver Coach Ron Sutton said. “He proved that he can perform on a big stage and that a win in Mexico is on the horizon. I am eager to get him to the United States to continue his development!”

2010 All American Speedway NASCAR Modified Rookie of the Year Nik Romano picked up an important win in his young career, winning the 50 lap NASCAR Late Model feature at TOYOTA Speedway in Irwindale, Calif. on Saturday night.

The 20 year-old rookie driver drives the #51 NASCAR Late Model for Tim Huddleston’s High Point Racing. Romano is also a member of the Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle driver development program which develops and prepares drivers for a career in motorsports.

The accomplished driver comes to NASCAR Late Models after championships in USAC Ford Focus Midgets, SCCA Formula Fords, and Quarter Midgets. His diverse racing background has also seen Romano earn a Rookie of the Year title in Micro Sprints on dirt, USAC Ford Focus Midgets, SCCA Formula Fords and NASCAR Modifieds.

Romano came into Saturday’s contest with a pair of fifth place finishes as his best marks to date in the highly competitive division. Romano qualified fourth at 19.034 seconds around the state of the art half-mile paved oval.

Rolling off fourth from the grid, Romano moved up into the second position by lap seven to challenge fellow rookie teammate Dylan Lupton. The two Northern Californians went back and forth before Romano finally took over the lead on lap 17.

Teammate and points leader Brandon Davis followed Romano past Lupton and gave Romano a serious challenge throughout the final 33 laps. Romano drove consistently throughout the caution-free race to take a .721 second victory over Davis at the line.

With the win, Romano moves to sixth in the standings and just 22 points behind first place. The win also improves Romano’s standings in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series where he runs in the top-ten in the state of California and in the top-100 in all of North America.

“Nik has been a winner in every level of racing and we all knew he would win in NASCAR late model stock cars,” Driver Coach Ron Sutton said. “Now that the first win is out of the way, the sky is the limit for how far Nik can get in the points standings!”

6-14-11 USG Night Brought With It Beautiful Weather and Outstanding Racing Starring Belletto, Butler, Philpot, Solari, Byers and Reichmuth
Source David Holman
Stockton 99 Speedway

On Saturday, June 11th, NASCAR Whelen All American Racing Series rolled back into action at the tight quarter-mile after a losing battle with Mother Nature the previous week. On USG Night at the Races, the ticket for the Event was filled with great racing which happened to come in the form of Western Late Models in Twin 50's, Grand American Modified, Super Stocks, Bombers and Basically-4-Cylinders. The only thing better on this night than the beautiful California sunset was the tumultuous onslaught of high-octane energy that continuously circled the infield. The nearly 2000 fans in the stands were the lucky witnesses that could attest to that fact. The Toughest Test In The West relentlessly grows pure racing excitement.

On occasion, an event gets off to a quick start, and this was such an event. The Basically-4-Cylinders were up first and in no time, Joseph Reichmuth (6) of Manteca was once again sitting in Victory Lane with his fifth win in a row, which left him perfect so far on the year.

This one got rolling with Nick Rogers (51) of Modesto sitting at the helm and Modesto's Jennifer Corder (24) flanking him to the right. Rogers jumped out to the early lead only to be derailed by the #6 of Manteca's Joseph Reichmuth on lap 2. Just as quickly, on lap 4, third generation driver Matt Anderson (5) of Manteca and third generation female driver Samantha Williams (4) of Ceres made contact getting down into one with Anderson getting the worse end of the deal as he went spinning towards the inside wall, which was followed closely by the first yellow of the night. Unfortunately for Williams, she was invited to join the #5 at the tail-end of the field for her share of the blame. On the lap 4 restart, and a couple thereafter, Reichmuth would assume that all-too-familiar position out front where he would bask in the fresh air and breathe it in all the way through to the checkers, despite a serious challenge by Rogers on lap 17 when the #51 took control of P1 for four laps until Reichmuth finally wrestled the lead back for good on lap 21. The win would continue Reichmuth's Perfect Season and increase his win-streak to five in a row. "This feels great to win five in a row," said the likable young Reichmuth, "I want to thank my entire crew for making this all possible, my mom and dad and all the fans who came out tonight." Rogers held on to finish an impressive second with Stockton's own Kelle Bobbitt (61) finishing on the podium in third. Hughson's Tommy Wood (28) wrapped it up in fourth while French Camp's Chris Boone (4x) rounded out the top five.

In the Bombers Division, anything can happen. And, of course, tonight it did when first-timer Dennis Byers (969) of Stockton was declared the winner after some reshuffling of the original finishing order.

This one came out of the blocks with Byers firmly planted at P1 and Robert Dueck (819) of Stockton planted firmly on Byers' right-side door. Byers got the great jump down low and beat the field into turn one where he would enjoy the brilliance of the spotlight until lap 6 when Stockton's David Tucker (350) slowed and finally came to rest low in the middle of the backstretch, which caught the attention of the flagman who promptly sent the yellow flying. On the ensuing restart, Byers took little time in reestablishing his lead role only to be slowed six laps later when, on lap 12, Dueck made slight contact with the leader between three and four and looped it, collecting Stockton's Mike Massone (007) in the process and bringing with it the second caution of the race, which led Dueck's night to an immediate end. On the restart, Byers resumed the lead only to surrender it three laps later, on lap 15, to Points Leader Jeremy Tucker (351) of Stockton. Once Tucker tasted the clean air out front, he refused to relinquish it as he began to chew away at the asphalt, leaving nothing but second place in his wake as he took it to the checkers in what would have been his third win on the year. Unfortunately, after further review, officials came to the conclusion that Tucker's great run to the front included some over-zealous driving on the #351's part, and he was penalized a lap, which landed him in fifth, instead, giving the win over to Byers, who ran a fantastic race of his own and gratefully accepted his new-found inheritance. "You take them any way you can get them," said the polite Byers, "I would like to thank all my sponsors and everyone who helps out to make this team possible." Tyler Guzman (93x) of Ceres would step up to the podium in second while Stockton's Bobby Simpson Sr. finished on the podium in third. Tony Karsting (312) of Stockton, doesn't make a lot of noise, but always shows up by race's end, brought her home in fourth and, of course, then there was Tucker in what had to be a huge disappointment, finishing fifth.

Points Leader and second generation driver from Modesto, Jeff Belletto (12x), has been strong all season, and tonight would be no exception as he out-qualified the field for the third time, which landed him on pole in the Western Late Model Twin #1, where he took full advantage and took it to the house for his third win of the year.

As mentioned, Belletto started P1 on the grid with Trevor Schlundt (28) of Clovis out to the right ready to go as the green flag flew. Belletto grabbed the holeshot down into turn one and from that point forward it was all about who was going to finish second on this night as the #12x would not be denied, taking it flag to flag in this caution-free fifty-lapper. However, Belletto did not go unmolested to the checkers as he had powerful company gnawing and chewing at his back bumper over the course of the race. That powerful company came in the form of none other than the Legendary Dave Byrd (78) of Seaside. But, as it was, Belletto proved too strong on this night even for the likes of a Dave Byrd. "Well, we're starting to make a little habit of it, it's kind of nice, you know," said the well-spoken Belletto, "Setting fast time, starting on the pole, then winning it." Then again, there was some great racing going on throughout the pack, but especially over the number five spot. Sacramento's Bobby Butler (3) had the spot, Modesto's Mike Beeler wanted it. And so it was, lap after lap, a dogfight of a battle of guts and skill until lap 40, when Beeler made a great move low and overtook Butler. And, of course, Butler had no choice but to relent to the massive pressure applied by Beeler for forty laps. This war alone was worth the price of admission. Byrd held on to finish second, while Schlundt fell off, if only slightly, to make it to the podium in third. Brentwood's Doff Cooksey (75) had his usual solid run bringing her home in fourth and, most assuredly, Beeler rounded out the top five.

In the Grand American Modified Division, Jason Philpot (15A) of Sacramento had one of those wins that leaves you baffled and has you thinking, "where'd he come from?" Nonetheless, when you put yourself in position enough times, good things can happen and oft-times do. Especially with a driver of Philpot's stature.

Lincoln's Nick Lyons (11x) started on pole, with a rare appearance starting from row one by Scott Winters (24) of Tracy, high and outside, due to mechanical issues suffered throughout the day. With the green flag in the air, Winters got that great jump on the outside that is most always there for the taking. And take he did as he put the power to the asphalt to the lead. The race hadn't even gotten into a rhythm when, on lap 3, Ryan Stepps (98) of Oakdale went for a spin of his own between turns one and two, which sent the yellow flying high in the night sky. On the restart, Winters, once again, took up residence on that prime real estate up front, but by lap 10, Philpot began nibbling at the back bumper of the #24 and, just as the intensity of the nibbling increased, the second yellow of the race reared its ugly face when, going off into turn one, Stepps and the #3x of Don Swartz made contact coming to rest up the hill against the fence, which brought Swartz's night to an abrupt end. On the lap 14 restart, Philpot beat Winters back to the stripe by a nose only to relinquish the position three laps later when Winters snatched it back. Unfortunately, just when it appeared their day had made a turn for the better, the #24 slowed on the track and pulled into the infield, handing the lead over to Philpot for the final time on this night. Philpot would take it the rest of the way for the extremely popular victory, but not without a major challenge from Points Leader Wes Miller (57A) of Turlock over the last few laps. However, Philpot knows how to win at Stockton, and he managed to stave off the pressure to prove that point. "It feels great to come out here and win again at Stockton 99 Speedway," said the always gracious Philpot, "It was a hard race tonight. A little bit of bad luck for thw#24 (Winters), but it happens to everybody." Miller held on to finish a very close second while the #5 of Jason Bamberg ran a beautiful race of his own in finishing on the podium in third. Andy Vanderveer (49) of Santa Rosa had another great run finishing her up in fourth with the #20A of Scott Alves showing great talent in finishing fifth.

2010 ALSC Champ Sammy Solari (79), from somewhere in the Central Valley, came to town and put the rubber down to win his first Super Stock Main Event of the year.

Due to a six invert off the Heat Races, 2009 Bomber Champ Ben Lewis II (22) of Stockton inherited the pole with Solari more than eager to get this one underway. When the green flag fell, Solari got to the gas a touch quicker than Lewis and took the lead going off into turn one. This one strung out quickly, but not in the true sense of "strung out" as there were battles over every position throughout the field. Up front, Solari shaded every move Lewis made, but not to detract from Lewis' abilities to handle a race car, not only did he nibble and gnaw at the back bumper of the #79, he chewed and swallowed lap after hungry lap. In the end, the wily veteran Solari proved to have too much in his bag of tricks for the young Lewis to overcome. And so the story goes, Solari flew beneath the checkers with Lewis still picking metallic pieces from his teeth as it was hard to tell where Solari's car ended and Lewis' began. "I would like to thank my car owners," said the always confident Solari, "They work on the car all the time and I just show up to drive it. It's pretty cool." Just as impressive, the number three spot came under attack by a pair of drivers, West Modesto's Garland Tyler (73) and 2010 WLM Champ Chad Holman (75) of Manteca. And finally, with checkers flying, Tyler would grab the unanimous decision in this bout, while Holman, after being bit all year long by the God of Mechanical Woes, came across the stripe welded to Tyler's bumper and would have to settle for fourth. Hughson's Mike Graham (93) finished her up in fifth, despite a wonderful battle over that spot all race long with the pressure being applied by Points Leader and Stockton's own Rich Harper (5). Harper was plagued with transmission trouble from early on, and, at this point, a sixth place finish had to be feeling really good.

The second Twin in the Western Late Models painted a different picture than the first as it does most often due to the invert. This time, Sacramento's Bobby Butler (3) showed the crowd and the competition he has what it takes to win at the tricky quarter-mile.

And, due to that aforementioned invert, Butler nabbed the pole in this one with Modesto's Mike Beeler (6), anxious and ready, to the right. With green flag in air, Butler wasted no time in determining that fresh air is the best air and off he went into the lead. Once out front, Butler began picking them up and putting them down as he chewed away at the asphalt, in huge hunks, and took it to the house for the wire-to-wire, caution-free Victory in dominating fashion. "My fans that came out, I hope everybody enjoyed the show. I drove my tail off tonight, flag to flag," said the excited Butler, "This is a new car, it's only our third race in it, so I'm happy about that." The young driver from Clovis, Trevor Schlundt (28), after producing an absolutely fantastic battle over that number two spot with Modesto's Mike Beeler (6), managed to slip by the #6, which landed him in second at the checkers. Beeler would have to settle for a podium finish in third, but had nothing to hang his head about because the show he and Schlundt put on, without doubt, was the best race of the night. Dave Byrd (78) of Seaside worked his way into a fourth place finish while #1 Twin Winner, Jeff Belletto (12x) of Modesto, after shadowing Byrd's every move, settled in at fifth.

NASCAR K&N Pro

Bill McAnally Racing’s No. 20 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry driven by NASCAR K&N Pro Series West three time champion driver Eric Holmes, was fast right off the trailer at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The NAPA Toyota was at the top of the time charts during both of the practice sessions. Unfortunately an electrical short in the tachometer caused a delay in getting on track for qualifying. The team quickly made the repair but was penalized by NASCAR and Holmes was given only one qualifying lap putting him on the outside of row three to start the race.

Holmes took the green flag and made strong run into the top-three by lap 25. At lap 52, he had moved into 2nd and was challenging the leader for position when he began to experience an overheating problem with the No. 20 NAPA Toyota’s radiator forcing him to retire at lap 130 of the 200 lap race. Holmes is seventh in the chase for the championship and only 62 points out of second.

The No. 16 Hasa Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota piloted by Moses Smith had an electrical problem during the first of two practice sessions. Second practice had the Hasa Toyota eighth quick of 28 cars. Smith would qualify the Hasa/NAPA entry in thirteenth.

By lap 52 of the 200 lap race, Smith had moved into the top-ten. At lap 81, smoke was seen coming from the No. 16 Hasa Toyota. Smith brought the car in where the Hasa team discovered a loose oil fitting causing an oil leak. They quickly fixed the problem. Smith returned to competition in 25th; eleven laps down. He was able to gain five positions by the time he took the checkered flag. Smith remains in second place in the chase for the championship.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts 200 from the Bullring at LVMS can be seen on Thursday June 23rd on SPEED Channel at 3 pm PST. Please check your local listings.

Next, the teams will be heading to the road course at Infineon Raceway. It will mark the return of BMR driver Paulie Harraka to the BMR roster. Last Bill McAnally Racing’s Teams at the Bullring at LVMS
season, Harraka brought home a second place finish piloting the No. 12 NAPA Gold Filter’s Toyota. Holmes, in the No. 20 NAPA Toyota, finished in fourth giving him a record of four top-five finishes in only five West Series starts at Infineon. Smith had his best Infineon finish last year, bringing home the No. 16 Hasa Toyota in ninth.

Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprints

On June 17th, the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series will travel to John Prentice's Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, California. The showcase at the popular 1/4-mile facility is a rare Friday night show for the traditional 410 sprints and a co-sanctioned event with the new USAC Western Racing Classic Sprint Cars. Last season, 2006 USAC/CRA Champion Cory Kruseman of Ventura claimed the action packed 30-lap feature.

The following night, both series will compete at Chris Kearns' famed Santa Maria Speedway. Yorba Linda's "The Bullet" Blake Miller will look for a repeat win over a talented roster of drivers at the 1/3-mile oval. In addition to the regular program, Kearns has produced a special "Last Man Standing Trophy Dash." The $1000 winner-take-all event will feature the top 4 qualifiers that transfer out of the heat races. Starting with a 4 car / 4-lap dash, the last place finisher is eliminated. The next round will have the 3 remaining cars battle in a 3-lap shootout. The process is continued until there is one driver remaining- winner take all.

By virtue of his feature win at Perris Auto Speedway's "Salute to Indy" on May 28th, Yorba Linda's Matt Mitchell holds an eleven point lead over the competition. Driving the J.W. Mitchell Motorsports' #37 Mancha Realtors / Sierra Springs Maxim, Mitchell has one heat race victory, five top-10 finishes, and led twenty-six feature laps. The USAC Western Midget Series graduate will be looking to extend his point lead with victories at both tracks.

Temecula's Mike Spencer is second in the chase for the championship. Piloting Ron Chaffin's famed #50 Madera Produce / Circle C Marketing Maxim, Spencer had engine problems and scored fifteenth at Perris. To date, the 3-time defending champion has three main event wins, two fast time awards, two heat race victories, three top-10 finishes, and led forty-two feature laps. Mike has his sights set on another title and feature wins at Watsonville and Santa Maria.

"The Bullet" Blake Miller of Yorba Linda is third in the point standings. Driving Mark Priestley's #7 Roy Miller Freightlines / Sander Engineering Maxim, Miller led early before claiming fifth at Perris. The 2006 Rookie of the Year has four top-10 finishes and led eleven feature laps on the season. Blake will be looking to add a Watsonville victory to resume and a repeat win at Santa Maria.

Riverside's "Dynamite" David Cardey is fourth in the point chase. Piloting his own #59 Circle Track Performance / Pick's Racing Engines Viper, Cardey had problems and scored twentieth at Perris. The former California Lightning Sprint Champion has one fast time award, two heat race victories, four top-10 finishes, and one hard charger award on the year. David will be in the mix for feature wins at both tracks.

Greg Bragg of Visalia is fifth in the standings. Driving Tom and Laurie Sertich's #92 Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror / Pacific Business Machine Buckley, Bragg earned his second hard charger award with a second place run after starting thirteenth. The 3-Time California Lightning Sprint Champion has one heat victory, five top-10 finishes, and led two feature laps in 2011. Greg will be looking to put the Moose Racing entry in victory circle at Watsonville and Santa Maria.

Among the other top USAC/CRA contenders expected to be in action are "Super" Rickie Gaunt of Torrance, Huntington Beach's Nic Faas, Yorba Linda's Austin, Cody, and "The Ripper" Rip Williams, Jace and Richard VanderWeerd of Visalia, Santa Maria's "Showtime" Danny Sheridan, and many more.

6-12-11 Perseverance and Self-Reliance Lead Juan Pitta Towards His Goals
Source RMG Race Media Group
All American Speedway

Twenty-seven-year-old, Galt Resident, Juan Pitta, drives the No. 11 Late Model at All American Speedway and is close to grabbing his first 2011 win. Pitta gained recognition when he qualified for NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program in 2009, and was considered for a spot on the 2010 popular reality TV show Changing Lanes with Team Revolution Racing. He is now back at All American Speedway for 2011 with a new car he built last year, with great results so far.

At the young age of 15, Juan decided to take up karting where he struggled as the only driver in his family. Juan does not have any racing history in his family to look up to for advice and whereas most kids at the go kart tracks had their fathers critiquing their every move. Juan raced an 1982 Emmick kart all on his own.  In the short time Juan raced karts he captured numerous wins and championships at the club and regional levels. By 2005, he decided to try out for a spot on Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle Racing Team. At the driver shootout Juan performed with excellent results and won a spot in the driver career development program.

In 2006 Pitta wanted to move into NASCAR Late Models which he tested with Bill McAnally by 2007, He and his family raised enough money to purchase his own late model. As a young car owner Pitta and his limited crew built his car and ran a limited schedule in 2007. He ran six races at Altamont Raceway where he captured one top five and three top ten finishes. He knew his car was capable of being competitive.

Pitta also raced at All American Speedway where he captured three top ten finishes in four races. In 2008, Pitta ran the full championship series at All American Speedway where he finished fifth in points and became a proud young parent to his new born daughter Katelyn. With his abilities as a car owner and driver he was selected to test at the Drive For Diversity Testing and Evaluation Combine in October of 2008 at South Boston Speedway. Pitta proved successful and was signed for his first year with the Drive for Diversity program under the BMR banner for 2009.

The Drive for Diversity program is where Pitta feels he’s gotten the most out of his racing career. Pitta gained skills and experience working with the largest team on the west coast, Bill McAnally Racing. "Racing late models at All American Speedway is tough because the competition level is extremely high and a lot of talent is exposed", says Pitta. He captured his first Late Model win with the help from BMR and finished fourth in championship points.

At the end of the season Juan was selected to try out for the popular NASCAR reality TV show Changing Lanes with Team Revolution Racing. Changing Lanes is a docu-reality series that spotlights drivers in NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program. Only the top 10 drivers qualified in the Drive for Diversity program were thrown into the Changing Lanes challenge to compete for limited spots on Team Revolution Racing. Pitta had a long haul with the Changing Lanes Documentary with mixed feelings. In 2010, he was not re-signed for the Drive for Diversity program. Apparently, Pitta was considered to be too old for the Drive for Diversity program was sent back to California. This did not stop him one bit, he knew he could take all of the experience, training and knowledge he gained from both Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle and Bill McAnally Racing programs and incorporate that into his own program. In late 2010, Juan debuted a new Late Model sporting the number 11. 2010 was his break out year as a car owner and driver, grabbed two wins and finished fifth place in championship points.

“It was a great learning experience from all aspects of racing on how important marketing yourself is to team leadership and even politics of racing and how important car sponsorship is,” says Juan on the Drive for Diversity program.

Today Juan is keeping up with the competition level at All American Speedway and is well on his way to earning his first 2011 win. With five races on the books for 2011 Juan has four top fives. “We're looking for wins, the points are going to fall into place. My team and I have worked hard to be a top caliber team. 6-12-11 Peter Murphy comes from 15th to bring home biggest career victory on Friday at the “Tribute to Gary Patterson/ Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial”
Source Gary Thomas
Gary Patterson/ Dave Bradway Jr Memorial

Whenever you mix in 410 sprint cars, a tight quarter-mile bullring and tons of money on the line it will make things interesting and on Friday night at the Silver Dollar Speedway that certainly came true.

With the Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series sanctioning the “Tribute to Gary Patterson/ Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial” the action continued to be intense for the tour and in the end it was the "Awesome Aussi" Peter Murphy bringing home the checkered flag for victory.

“This is just so amazing I don’t know what to say and I’m almost tearing up a bit,” said an emotional Murphy in victory lane. “I’ve never had a bigger win in my career and to come out on top with the King of the West Series is a great feeling.”

A very strong field of 38-sprint cars signed in for the eighth Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series race of the season and to begin the night Chico’s very own Jonathan Allard set fast-time. For his efforts Allard earned $1000 plus a beautiful custom-made “Tribute to Gary Patterson” plaque from Grant’s Fine Art.

After some exciting preliminary competition the 40-lap A-main took to the Silver Dollar bullring and at the waving of the green flag it was hometown hero Jonathan Allard charging into the lead. Early on the two-time Golden State 410 champ looked large and in charge pulling away to a comfortable lead. Once traffic came into play however, it began to bunch things up as Kaeding and Kyle Hirst made it a three-car fight.

The trio proceeded to put on a stunning wheel-to-wheel show for the lead, slicing and dicing with the crowd roaring their approval. The thrilling battle took place over a handful of laps, but with 19-complete everything changed when Allard and Kaeding banged wheels, which resulted in “TK” flipping and “JA” also coming to a stop.

Hirst would inherit the lead and when the green lights came on again he beat Sacramento’s Willie Croft on a double-file restart to take command. The Hirst family was instrumental in getting the “Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial” off the ground and it’s always been a race that the 23-year-old has wanted to win.

Driving for McMillen Motorsports Hirst looked like a rocket ship out front, but on lap 25 more drama would unfold when contact with a lapped car in turn two ended his hopes at victory. This gave the lead to Hirst’s soon to be brother-in-law Croft and when racing got back underway “Double Down” distanced himself from the pack.

With Croft out front the rest of the field put on a tremendous show, as Australian’s Ian Madsen and Peter Murphy, along with Brent Kaeding, Evan Suggs and a fast-moving Allard diced it up among the top-five. Murphy eventually won out in the fight and claimed the runner up spot after starting 15th on the grid.

After winning the Mini Gold Cup in 2004 Croft looked to add another major victory to his resume and appeared to be on way to doing so, until lap-35 when he slowed to a stop with reported brake issues. It was a tough break for the driver that has been doing such a great job all season long with the Golden State King of the West Sprints.

The always likeable Murphy now found himself in the top-spot and with five-laps left he led the field back to green. Things would come to a stop however, as Allard spun around in turn four to bring out a yellow and put an unfortunate end to his night. The final restart of the night saw Brent Kaeding and Medford, Oregon’s Roger Crockett try everything to get by Murphy for the lead, but that didn’t happen and the Australian native crossed the stripe to win his first “Tribute to GP/ Bradway Memorial.”

For his efforts Murphy will bring home more than $4500, with extra money courtesy of Butler Built Performance and lap money that was collected by Dave and Dianne Durica. Murphy not only received lap money in the A-main, but also the Last Chance Qualifier where he finished second. Making an impressive charge to finish second at the checkered was LCQ winner Crockett, who also claimed the PitStopUSA hard charger award & an extra $556 for the night after starting 18th.

Tim Kaeding made a strong rebound at the end to charge all the way back up to third at the conclusion and maintain his Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series point lead. Rounding out the top-five in the 40-lapper were Brent Kaeding and Ian Madsen. The top-10 was completed by Chico’s Brad Bumgarner, Evan Suggs, 22nd starter Jason Statler of Grass Valley, Chico’s Robby Whitchurch and Chico’s Jason York.

An exciting Last Chance Qualifier was picked off by Roger Crockett and the four 10-lap heats were won by Princeton’s Mason Moore, Ian Madsen, St. Helena’s Rico Abreu and Tim Kaeding. All heat race winners received a Goodyear right rear tire and five sleeves of tear offs courtesy of Hoserville, as well as a free powder coating job courtesy of Amerikote. The Dash was claimed by Tim Kaeding, with the C-main being won by New Zealander Jason Scott. Allard’s fast-time to begin the night was a 12.093.

It was definitely a night to remember as we paid honor to legends Gary Patterson and Dave Bradway Jr. We would also like to thank everyone that made the event possible and all who contributed to make it a success.

6-12-11 Hunt Takes Over USAC Points Lead With Victory at Madera
Source Steven Blakesley
USAC Western Classic

Tony Hunt made it 2-for-2 in races at Madera in 2011 by winning the “Al Pombo Classic” on Saturday night at Madera Speedway to take over the USAC Western Classic Racing Series points lead.

With the convincing victory, Hunt is the first repeat winner in the new series that saw Indiana’s Bill Rose win the “John Padjen Classic” at Chico while Scott Pierovich won the “Larry Burton Classic” at Roseville.

16 USAC Sprint Cars filled the pit area at Madera for the 50 lap contest on the one-third mile pavement oval. Hunt got his evening off to a good start when he set fast-time at 13.764 seconds around the speedway in his #56 Metal Works entry. Audra Sasselli qualified second while incoming points leader Pierovich was third.

Fresno’s Tim Skoglund led from outside pole with Pierovich and Hunt moving into second and third respectively by lap five. The top ten cars ran under a blanket with Hunt going to work on the outside of Pierovich on lap eight.

Hunt and Pierovich traded blows for several laps in a battle reminiscent of their memorable duel in April, with Hunt taking over second on lap 15. Brian McClish followed Hunt past Pierovich, with Sasselli locking horns with Pierovich over the next couple of circuits.

Skoglund, Hunt, and McClish raced in a tight battle for the lead past the halfway point with McClish making several bids on the outside through lapped traffic. Finally on lap 29, Hunt broke through by passing Skoglund for the lead on the inside.

Idaho’s Johnny Giesler began moving forward by passing Sasselli and challenging Pierovich. After a three-wide battle, Giesler moved into fourth in his debut appearance at Madera. Sasselli began to gain momentum when she passed Pierovich and Giesler through lap 38.

The first caution of the race finally flew on lap 40 when Marvin Mitchell made contact with the wall in turn two. Sasselli used the restart to pass Skoglund for third while Tim Barber passed Pierovich for sixth.

A late caution on lap 49 came out when Cody Gerhardt spun in turn two. A dramatic battle ensued on the one-lap restart when Sasselli challenged McClish, but Mcclish won the war.

Hunt cruised to victory with a good restart to take the win over McClish, Sasselli, Skoglund, and Giesler. Incoming USAC Western Sprint Car Series points leader Luis Ramos III finished ninth while incoming USAC Western Classic Series points leader Pierovich finished seventh.

Kaeding Performance Awards went to Sasselli and Barber. Heat race wins went to Shauna Hogg and Ramos.

With the victory, Hunt takes over the points lead in the Classic Series by 13 markers over Pierovich as the series moves on to the dirt in a pair of races co-sanctioned by USAC/CRA. Friday June 17 will see USAC hit the quarter-mile Ocean Speedway and the series will visit Chris Kerns’ Santa Maria Speedway on Saturday June 18.

6-8-11 Moses Smith is looking forward to racing at the Bullring in Las Vegas
Source Kaye Reshaw
NASCAR K&N

Bill McAnally Racing driver Moses Smith and the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota team are looking to give team owner, Bill McAnally a third victory at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Smith is coming to the Bullring to compete in Saturday's O’Reilly Auto Parts 200 NASCAR K&N Series West event.

The series has made only 3 previous visits to the d-shaped short track just north of Las Vegas. Bill McAnally Racing’s Austin Cameron put the NAPA entry on the pole in 2002 and brought home the victory. The following year, veteran driver Jim Inglebright piloted BMR’s Jellybelly entry to Victory Lane after leading the most laps and starting on the pole.

The Bullring is not new to Smith. He ran a full season in the ASA Speed Trucks in 2005 where he brought home a second place finish in three starts.

“The Bullring has some good racing,” said Smith. “Its d-shape reminds me of the track in Kyle, Texas. It’ll allow for some great side-by-side racing with plenty of opportunity to pass. It’s going to be a great race for the fans and a great opportunity for the HASA team to close the point gap for this year’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship.”

Smith and the No. 16 HASA Toyota team are currently second in the chase for the West Series championship with ten races left on the schedule.

Joining the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Series June 11 will be the NASCAR Super Late Model, NASCAR Charger, NASCAR Bomber, Legend Cars and Bandolero classes. 6-8-11 Troy Rutherford Sprints to 5th Ventura Win
Source Lance Jennings
Ventura Racing Association

After starting third in last Saturday's main event, Ojai's Troy Rutherford took the lead from 2002 champion Jimmy Crawford on lap twenty-eight. From there, the defending series champion sailed to the Round #10 victory at Ventura Raceway. The 30-lap win marked his first triumph since April 16th and his fifth of the 2011 campaign.

With twenty-four cars signed in, Tom Harper and Brent Camarillo paced the main event. With the green flag waving, Camarillo got the better of Harper to grab the lead. Looking for his first win of the season, Camarillo held off numerous challenges from Troy Rutherford through the early going. Rutherford briefly took the lead, only to have the young driver battle back to reclaim the top spot.

After a yellow flag restart, the two drivers fought for real estate at the bottom of turn one. As they banged wheels in tight quarters, Jimmy Crawford drove around the duo to take command on lap eighteen. With Crawford out front, Rutherford gave chase and Steve Conrad looked to advance from third.

After a late race yellow bunched the field, Crawford set the pace followed by Rutherford, Greg Taylor, and Markus Niemela, and Jace VanderWeerd. Crawford chose the low groove of the Ventura oval, as veteran drivers Rutherford and Taylor preferred the high line. Rutherford grabbed the lead from Crawford, as Taylor quickly slid into second. The final laps were completed in a torrid pace with Troy Rutherford taking the win, followed by Greg Taylor, Jimmy Crawford, Markus Niemela, and Brian Camarillo.

Piloting the #11 Amsoil / L&H Consulting special, Troy Rutherford scored his fifth main event win of the season. Earlier in the program, Rutherford also won the night's third heat race, his fourth 10-lap victory of 2011. The former SCRA Sprint Car Rookie of the Year will be looking for another Ventura feature to add to his resume when the series returns to action on June 18th.

Ventura's Greg Taylor earned "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job" honors on the night with a second place run after starting eleventh. Driving the #7 Clark Engineering Construction / Westco International Consulting Inc. machine, the former track champion was fourth in his heat race. The series point leader will be one of the drivers to watch on June 18th.

Jimmy "Neutron" Crawford of Newbury Park led ten laps of the feature before settling into third. Racing his #17 Twister-X / Steve Gresham Racing Engines entry, Crawford was third in his heat race and is now in a three way tie for fourteenth in the point chase. In limited action, the veteran driver has five top-10 finishes on the season.

Santa Barbara's Markus Niemela was fourth in the night's action. Piloting the #69 Steve Watt Enterprises / Christian Stover Foundation machine, Niemela finished second in his heat race and currently sits eighth in the standings. The young driver is improving with every race and will be looking for the top spot when the VRA 360 Sprints return to action.

Rounding out the top five is Camarillo's Brian Camarillo. Driving the #22 Agromin Soil / Waste Management car, Camarillo was fifth in his heat race and won the 12-lap semi-main. The young driver is currently seventh in the chase for the championship and will be looking for better luck then next time out.

Ventura Raceway had five other companion classes scheduled on the night. Cliff Warren won the VRA Senior Sprint main event with Austin Rodarte taking the IMCA Modified victory. Mike Neal claimed the Senior Dwarf Car win and Lars Wolfe scored the 20-lap Pro Dwarf Car feature. Trevor Fitzgibbon continued his winning ways with the Sport Compacts and David Pankratz raced to the Go-Kart division win.

6-7-11 Pierovich Leads USAC Sprints Back to Madera For Pombo Classic
Source Steven Blakesley
USAC Western Classic Racing

The USAC Western Classic Racing Series will run it’s third straight pavement race of the 2011 season as the series returns to Madera Speedway this Saturday night for the “Al Pombo Classic”. Alamo’s Scott Pierovich leads the points after taking a strong victory in the “Larry Burton Classic” at Roseville’s All American Speedway on May 14.

The race will honor Central Valley legend Al Pombo who passed away last November at the age of 85. Pombo won more than 500 races in his career that included seven Super Modified championships. Vintage Super Modifieds, including one formerly driven by Pombo, will compete on Saturday night along with the USAC teams.

Pierovich and six-time USAC champion Tony Hunt have gone back-and-forth throughout the first two pavement races of 2011. Hunt won an epic duel with Pierovich during the “Fred Gerhardt Classic” in April at Madera and finished second to Pierovich at Roseville.

The edge in the overall series points goes to Pierovich after a solid eighth place finish in the dirt opener at Chico on March 11.

Saturday’s action at Madera not only pays points for the USAC Western Classic but also for the USAC Western Sprint Car Series. Luis Ramos III of Clovis leads that division after a third place finish in Salt Lake City on Memorial Day.

A gaggle of cars find themselves locked up behind Pierovich in the overall standings with Folsom’s Jerry Kobza third ahead of Sebastopol standout Geoff Ensign. Visalia’s Audra Sasselli didn’t compete at Chico but still ranks fifth with pavement specialist Ramos in sixth. Fair Oaks’ Shauna Hogg, Cody Gerhardt, Tim Barber, and Brian McClish round out the top-ten in the standings.

Expected to join the top-ten USAC Western Classic drivers at Madera is Idaho racer Johnny Giesler. Giesler races sprints with and without the wing at his home track Meridian Speedway and a few other Idaho drivers are considering the trip to Madera as well.

Former Ford Focus champion Tim Skoglund of Fresno is also expected along with pavement regulars Gordon Rodgers, Marvin Mitchell, Don Emery, and Bill Logan.

Joining the USAC Western Classic Racing Series sprint cars on the bill will be USAC Ford Focus Midgets and Young Guns.

Grandstands open at 5:00 p.m. with racing to start at 6. Tickets are just $18 for adults, $10 for youth ages 6-12, with kids 5 and under free!

The Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial pays tribute to fallen race car driver Dave Bradway Jr., who lost his life in a sprint car crash at Skagit Speedway's Dirt Cup in 1987. It is the biggest event of the season for the Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series and packs extra money and awards all night.

Dave and Diane Durica have collected lap money and each lap of the A-main and Last Chance Qualifier will pay $100 to be distributed among the top three each lap. The leader of the lap gets $50, second $30 and third $20. Butler Built Performance has also donated $500 to the winners’ share of the Tribute to Gary Patterson/ Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial, making the 40-lap A-main on Friday $3500-to-win plus the lap money.

The hard charger in the A-main will receive $550 courtesy of donations from Cherry St. Mini Storage, American Tool & Mfg, Bobby McMahan Racing, the Mussell Brothers of Santa Maria and Steward Ranches Eat Beef! The hard charger, as always with KWS, will also receive a $200 certificate to PitStopUSA.com

Fast-time at the event on June 10 will also pay $550, as the decision was made to award Kyle Larson with half of the fast-time money during the rainout last month. Donations for the fast-time money were from Brent Kaeding, Rich Stadelhofer, Carwash Mike, Paul Brandon, GT Promotions & Shaver Racing Engines. 6-5-11 Ronnie Day Wins First Career Ocean Sprints Main in Thriller

Ocean Speedway

Ocean Sprints points leader Ronnie Day of Salinas made his first career series victory one truly for the ages, fending off 2010 series champ Tommy Tarlton in a crowd-pleasing finish that saw them collide as they came to the stripe.

The official margin of victory was .167 seconds but it was visually much closer than that. 2010 King of California Kyle Larson came home a close third.

“We kept going back-and-forth and I opened the door for him a little bit,” Day said. “I had one hand on the wheel and one hand on the wing valve to get more traction and we beat him to the line!”

Chasing an incoming rain storm, the feature rolled off after 7 p.m. on a slick and glazed over race track. Tarlton led the field to green and led through a series of restarts.

Four cautions slowed the first four laps of racing, with heat race winner Orval Burke, Jr. spinning twice to end his night early in a tough break for the 16 year-old rookie. On the lap four restart, heat race winner St. Helena’s Rico Abreu went high in turn two and back pedaled from third to 11th.

Another heat race winner on the night, Justin Sanders, spun in turn three on lap seven to bring out the yellow again. Day moved past Auburn’s Andy Forsberg on the restart to take over second before the race was stopped again for Abreu stalling in turn three.

The next six laps of competition saw a furious battle between Larson and “Cowboy” Craig Smith, before Smith then fell back to battle Jason Statler. Statler spun in turn three to force a yellow on lap 13.

Fremont’s Shane Golobic was to restart seventh but had a bearing failure in the left rear that caused heavy damage to his rear axle. Golobic made it to the infield and the race went green.

Business picked up with Sanders leaping up to sixth by lap 19 while Larson took over third from Forsberg on lap 23. The top-three cars of Tarlton, Day, and Larson raced under a blanket with many slidejobs to the approval of the crowd. Day took the lead on lap 28 as the caution came out to set up a wild two lap shootout.

Day had a strong restart running around the top, but Tarlton tried on multiple occasions to make the bottom work. Coming to the checkered flag, Tarlton threw his car deep into turn four and they raced side-by-side to the line.

In the drag race to the stripe, Tarlton’s left front made contact with Day as they ripped under the checkered flag. Day took the victory while Tarlton’s car came to a stop in turn one with damage.

“We had a good setup on the car,” Day said. “We were tight early but the car came to us right when we needed it to. I have to thank my brother Keith for all of his support this season. We’ve been so consistent this year by being in the top-five in every race.”

Larson’s third place finish gives him his third straight top-five after a fifth with the USAC National Midgets in the “Night Before the 500” and a second place run at Calistoga with Golden State King of the West. Forsberg and Brent Kaeding rounded out the top-five.

The DDNi Hard Charger award went to rookie Jeremy Chisum who recovered from a flip in his heat race to drive from 22nd to 11th in the feature. Brent Kaeding won the Ray Scheidt’s Electric Fast-Time award with an 11.922 second lap around the quarter-mile dirt oval.

The Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo will return on June 24, with the next major sprint car show at Watsonville on June 17th with the USAC CRA and Western Classic series in co-sanctioned event. Fromer Ocean Speedway wingless champion Ryan Bernal is among those expected to compete.

Golden State King of The West Sprints

With no racing on tap this weekend the Golden State King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series will get ready for a busy two-night’s of racing next week on Friday June 10 in Chico and Saturday June 11 in Medford, Oregon.

The opener for the big weekend on June 10 at Silver Dollar Speedway will be billed as the “Tribute to Gary Patterson/ Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial” and will have a number of special prizes up for grabs to drivers, which are carried over from the Bradway rainout on May 7.

This will be the fourth year that the Tribute to Gary Patterson is held at Silver Dollar Speedway and will also mark the eighth race of the season for KWS.

Known as the "Dancing Phantom," the "Preacher," the "Hostile Hippie" or just simply "GP," Patterson was one of the most colorful characters of his time. He claimed a number of major victories in his career including the Gold Cup Race of Champions, the Super Dirt Cup in Washington and the Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ascot Park among others.

Patterson unfortunately lost life his life in a sprint car crash at the Calistoga Speedway in 1983 and an event in his memory had been held at the half-mile track until 2007, when the Tribute to GP was moved to Silver Dollar Speedway the following year.

Like at all KWS events the fast time driver will also receive a custom plaque from Grant’s Fine Art.

Sponsoring the heat races at the Tribute to GP/ Bradway Memorial will be the fan group known as Hoserville. Each heat race winner will stop on the front stretch to be interviewed and will receive a right rear tire, five sleeves of tear offs and a trophy to hand out to a kid in the stands. Each heat race winner will also receive a coupon towards powder coating one sprint car chassis courtesy of Willie Croft and Amerikote.

On Saturday June 11 the tour heads outside of California for the first time this season with an event at the Southern Oregon Speedway in Medford, OR. Each season the Golden State 410’s make a traditional stop at the track on way to the non-point, $40,000-to-win Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Washington.

Last season saw a strong car count and great racing in the main event at the one-third mile oval, which was highlighted by a tremendous late-race duel with Chico’s Jonathan Allard and Elk Grove’s Kyle Larson. In the end it was the youngster picking up the win with Allard in second and Campbell’s Brent Kaeding in third.

The Southern Oregon Speedway is located at the Jackson County Sports Park just outside of White City, OR and is about 15 minutes from downtown Medford. General admission tickets will be $20 for adults with seniors, juniors & veterans $15 and children $5.
